The Story of
a Bridge!
There are no signs of undertaking the repair work on the
dilapidated Barkur bridge even after 3 months now. The days are
passing by and people seem to forget the life before the collapse
of the bridge. Thousands of people rushing on the road walking
during the peak hours is a daily occurrence on the bridge. There
is even a makeshift canteen operating on it!
There is no clear information from the government. If the system
continues to roll at the same pace there is hardly any doubt that
people of Barkur, Mandarthi, Kokkarne will loose the contacts from
Brahmavar and Udupi. The bridge is dilapidated due to the heavy
onslaught of the over ladden ore trucks. No decision is taken yet
for the repair works and the authorities are waiting for the
report from the experts. Torr steel research foundation from
Bangalore
inspected the bridge in the first week of October and submitted a
preliminary report. Accordingly, the construction work of the
bridge was found to be of low quality, and out of the 12 spans, 4
spans are damaged beyond repair. So it is advised to replace all
spans at an estimated cost of 2.5 crores. According to Mr.
Jayprakash Hegde, the local MLA, negotiations are on to call on
the tenders for repair work, once the experts’ report is in hand,
and to finish the repair work by May 2005.
People are using a 15 km roundabout route via Kavadi – Saligrama
from Haladi, Bidkalkatte, Shiriyara, Saibarakatte, Kokkarane,
Mandharthi to reach Brahmavar and Udupi. This is not only
expensive but more of time consuming. There are very few buses
plying up to the bridge, but one has to take a rickshaw or walk a
mile to catch up with these irregular buses.
Once a historical place, on its way to become a tourist centre,
Barkur is like an isolated gloomy island today with a deserted bus
stand and shops without business. According to the shop owners, Barkur used to be the business centre for people from Saibarkatte,
Mandharthi, etc, and they used to buy most of their goods from
Barkur. Now that there is no proper transport, business is reduced
to less than half of the original. Chemists say it is very
difficult to get the life saving drugs from Udupi in cases of
emergencies.
There is a slow but steady rage cropping up among the people of
Barkur and the surroundings about the non effectiveness of the
government. They have formed a Citizen’s Forum named “Sethuve
Horrata Samithi” to take more actions and to pressurise the
authorities.
The district authorities and the government have to give the
correct information about the repair work of the bridge. They have
to restrict the movement of the extra heavy vehicles on the old
bridges in the district. But till such time the bridge is repaired
and opened for the general public, it is only questions and
questions but no answers.

VILLAGE
TO COLLEGE FOUNDATION

It was decided in 1998 to provide small financial assistance or
scholarships only to very needy students from Moodahadu and
Pandeshwar Villages who were planning to attend college at Barkur
but were unable to do so due to lack of funds. To facilitate
recruiting of students, help was sought from the Barkur Parish
Priest, Fr. Benjamin DeSouza and later Fr. Sylvester DeSouza.
During the past 6 years from 1999 to 2004, a total of 80
scholarships have been awarded in varied amounts totaling Rs
110,000 so far. In 2004 alone, 20 students from Barkur College
were given Rs 1000 each to complete their degree program. In
addition, a total of Rs 162,000 was donated to school and college
projects.
The scholarship program is based on the personal experience of Dr.
G. Fernandes from the remote Village Moodahadu, who after
completing his High School at Barkur was unable to go to College
at the nearest location, which at that time was the City of
Mangalore 60 miles away, due to the hardships of his family. He
then went to Bombay to find a job to support his family. After
several years he went to the
USA
and completed his BSc, MSc and PhD degrees and is still working as
a Professor at a Texas university. He now wants to help as many
needy students as possible by providing them an opportunity to
attend the nearest College at Barkur right away to find better
paying jobs needed to uplift their family members.
The main purpose of this program is to provide immediate help to
families to send their promising students to College rather than
to work. Only those students who are about to complete their PUC
and are unable to find other sources of funds should apply for
scholarships. The scholarships range from Rs 1000 to 1500 per
year ($25 - $35) or more as funds are available to pay towards
tuition or books. Application forms are available at the
Principals office at 1st Grade Govt. College at Barkur.
A form duly filled it with an attested copy of their family income
and copies of SSLC and 1st or 2nd year PUC
grades should be duly signed by the Principal. The Principal will
then send all applications to G. Fernandes who will go through and
choose among the students based on their merit and especially the
hardships of their family. Funds will be made available through
the Principal at the beginning of each school year.
Each year 10 new students and students in their 2nd and
3rd years of College will be supported to complete
their BA or BSc degree. Applications will be considered only for
students with good grades and from villages nearby Barkur and
Sastan at this stage. Attempts will also be made to choose a
Village to College Scholarship student with the highest grades to
continue his or her studies at the graduate level at the nearby
Mangalore University towards a MA or MSc degree.
Any donation to this program will be gratefully accepted.
A scholarship will be named for each donor and a photograph of the
student and his or her annual progress report will also be sent to
each donor. So far 4 very generous donors have recently given
close to Rs 30000 ($700) towards this specific cause. Please
support this activity so that it can grow and become successful in
the coming years at the historically famous town of
Barkur
located in
Karnataka State in India.
