27th   Annual Day of ICYM, Barkur

ICYM, Barkur unit after completing its 27 years of fruitful existence celebrated its 27th Annual Day . Rev. Fr. Remigious Aranah, Parish Priest presided over the evening function. Miss Priya Pinto, who secured first rank in Karnataka state for Secretarial Practice was honoured by Mr. John Gonsalves, representative of ICYM Ex-members Association. The other ICYM members who got honoured on this occasion are :

Mr. Roshan Lobo, Silver medal winner in university sports, Mr. Anish Dias, who represented the college team in State Level Chess competition, Mr Alwyn D'Almeida, who secured the 2nd best president award in Mangalore Diocese, Miss Sabitha Mascarenhas, who was elected as the Vice President of Central Council and Mr. Rolson Fernandes, who was elected as the Vice President of Milagres College students' union.

Apart from Mr. John Gonsalves, Rev. Fr. Peter Pinto, Director, Central Council, Mr. Gerald Gonsalves, Mrs. Norine Lobo and Mr. Herald D'Souza were the guests.

Mr. Roshan Lobo, Secretary presented a brief report on the activities of ICYM. Miss Sabitha Mascarenhas, President while welcoming the guests thanked the people of Barkur for their support to  the ICYM unit which  bagged the 2nd  best unit award in Mangalore Diocese. Mr. Roshan Lobo proposed vote of thanks.

Miss Priya D'Souza and Mr. Roshan Pinto along with Mr. Rolbin D'Souza conducted the proceedings. Kannada drama "Yella Nav Ensdhang Aththa" and dances by the members were the part of entertainment programme.

Bennekudru Annual Festival

The popularly known "Bennekudru Habba", annual festival of "Shree Kulamahashtree Ammanavara Devasthanaa" was celebrated recently. The three day festival saw the streets of Barkur illuminated with bright lights and decorated beautifully. Installation of Golden Idol of Amma was the main event that took place this time. “Hore kanike”  from the Mogaveera community all over the district was received to mark the beginning of the festival. Genda Seve and other religious ceremonies were held.

Alternate Road Completed

The  alternate mud road for the repair work of the Barkur Bridge is completed.  Mr. Jayapraksh Hegde, MLA who is taking a personal interest in the work  said that though the work was hindered due to the high current of the river , now its completed  and and two ends are connected on Monday and the same will be opened for the public use within 2 days .

Work in progress at Barkur Bridge

Much awaited repair work on Barkur Bridge is going on full swing now. A temporary mud bridge is being built for the passage of the general public and light vehicles is undertaken before the actual repair work is started.

INTER DISTRICT ATHLETIC MEET

Fourth Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Coorg Inter District Athletic Meet was held at SMS Sports ground , Brahmavar recently. The three days long   Athletic meet was conducted  as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the SMS College Brahmavar under the combined sponsorship of  SMS College, The Old Students Association, Udupi District Athletic Association and Bangalore Sports Club.  The Arjuna Award winner, Olympian  Rosa Kutty inaugurated the Athletic meet.

Mr. K. Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA, and the Honorary President of the athletic meet organising committee wished the athletes and hoisted the flag.

Western Zone IGP Mr. Sathyanarayan Rao, organising committee president Mr. Balakrishna Hegde,  Rev. Fr. N. J. Thomas of SMS College, Physical Director Mr. Chandrashekhar Hegde and the Convener of the organising committee Mr. Govindaraj Hegde were present at the occasion.

Competitions were held at 5 levels for the 2241 athletes from the 259 educational institutes from the 3 districts.

Mr. Gopal Kidiyoor, Mr. Damodar Shetty and Mr. Govindaraj were honored for their achievements in the sports field.  Prof. K. Narayanan of the host college welcomed the gathering.
