VISIT TO THE BARKUR BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION SIGHT.
It has been more than a year since the
Barkur Bridge collapsed and caused a great amount of inconvenience
to travelers, school children, and also visitors to our historic
Barkur. Although reconstruction efforts are going on discovery of
the latest damages to the bridge supports (pillars) has caused a
major delay in completion of the bridgework.
Bridge work in
progress
Collapse of the
bridge pillar
During my visit to Barkur last month I went to see the progress on
the bridgework and took pictures to post on the website for the
viewers of Barkuronline.com. On my visit I saw that work was
progressing full swing but the bridge supports have started to
collapse and that has halted the work. Now construction
authorities are waiting for the go ahead from higher government
officials to inspect the sight so work can be resumed.
People are waiting
for the boat to cross the river
In spite of the all
the inconveniences, Gretta Teacher of Barkur still smiles
Meanwhile people are trying to go on with their daily business.
Many cross the river by boat. All vehicles are getting to N.H. 17
via the Kawdi road. Life is not easy for anyone there, and I
appreciate the patience of our local community. They try to help
each other the best way they can. Here are some photos of the
bridge and also people waiting to cross the river by boat.

Antiques of Medieval Ages Found in Barkur Government College
Campus.
Some antique things dating back to the Medieval Ages when
Vijaynagar Empire was reigning the state have recently been found
in the campus of Government College of Barkur near here.
The Mangalore varsity inter-state
NSS students who were offering their voluntary services in the
college found the antiques. As they dug the ground in the college
campus, they found some copper coins, bones and pieces of pots.
This was announced by D B Jagadish Shetty, history professor,
PPC
College, Udupi who is also the in-charge of excavations that have
now been carried out by Bangalore-based M H Krishna Indian Study
Centre.
He said that the coins were studied by Nityanand Pai of Moodbidri
who opined that these kinds of copper coins were in circulation
during the final years of Keladi and Vijayanagar Empires. "On the
other hand, the pieces of the pots and bones that have been found
represent the customs and traditions that were prevalent those
days," he added.
Now further excavations have been carried out at the
Government
College, Barkur.
Rajshekhar Hebbar, principal of
Crossland College, Brahmavar, Prof Ganesh Pai, head of History
Department and varsity coordinator Gopal are in the research team
of the excavators. The historical finds have been preserved in the
history department of the college.
