Cracks in the new
bridge!!?
Its not even one year and the wounds are not healed yet. And a
rumor or news of the new Bridge across river Sita in the verge of
collapsing sent the shivers down the spines of Barkurians. For
they know better than anyone, how it is like having or not having
the bridge. On 3rd November morning the news created a
sensation and a lot of people gathered at the Barkur Bridge.
Cracks have appeared on the surface of the new bridge at 2-3
places and many people led by Janajagrathi Vedike gathered and
protested against this and urged the authorities to take necessary
actions at the earliest.
They complained that ore laden heavy trucks are plying on the
bridge overnight and destroying the bridge. They stopped the
vehicular traffic for about 10 minutes as protest and appealed to
PWD and DC for quick actions. The protest was lead by Sathish
Poojari, Member of Udupi Jilla Panchayath and member of Jana
Jagrathi Vedike, Sathish Amin, Ganesh, Ravi Poojari, Barkur
Rikshaw Drivers association etc.
Suresh, Engineer from the District PWD visited the bridge
immediately and inspected the bridge and explained that only the
top 7.5 cm of concrete is cracked due to expansion and vehicular
traffic and its common wear and tear and assured that there is no
damage to the structure of the bridge. He said that the contractor
is bound for the maintenance of the bridge for one year and the
cracks will be repaired at the earliest.
