It looks like, I underestimated Mr. Deepak Shetty by asking whether he
can help a Barkurian by offering a job! Then only he opened the truth
box! This is yet an another example how lot of generous and charitable
spirited people stay hidden. Thank you for bringing to our attention
about the Toyota-Kirloskar Training Institute. Hope the light from
your Deepa(k) reaches the remote villages where even electricity has
not penetrated every household. Apparently people have cell phones
and Coca-Cola, but no Tap water! Am I right?
Besides learning Japanese, learning Chinese and Spanish is the way to
go, because, these are the bread winning languages already, besides
English of course.
What’s in a name Mr. Alvares? The airport has a name, the churches
and temples are named after Deities, even though not one of those
deities paid for the building of the structures! People recognize by
giving certificates and the certificates bear names. Without profits
and recognitions, no progress would take place. People obtain
patents; a book has an author with a name, etc. The church hall walls
are full of names of donors. Sudhakar Shetty paid in Lakhs to save and
run the school thus he recognizes his mother whose care and blessings
are the reasons for his success. If I had money to spare I may
display Dr. Sr. Helen Consilia Fernandes a monument! It’s not shame to
display ones name, may be for fame, so what? Someone may emulate and
get inspired by reading such names. I do admire Koti Channaya and
what they stood for. Some one wrote books on them, thus I know who
they are.
Someone asked me the other day, “Are you the same Jemy who used to
fish like the ‘Neeru Naai’? And this too is a name! and I take pride
in it. Now I fish from above the water! Thanks folks.

Hello Mr. Alvares,
It is nice to see your recent response. For a while we did not hear
from you as well as especially from James. I think finally Kishoo has
assessed current situation in Dakshina Kannada where all are
interested in promoting respective religion related activities
especially either to carry out repairs or erecting new buildings. It
is also my observation that very few will respond to give towards
others education or medical needs or to improve village schools or
colleges as Kishoo stated.
Glad to know slowly local people are devoting now to help our own
locals providing them with jobs etc. You may be interested to know
there are people want to attend colleges but many have financial
difficulties. This year alone, I received 150 applications seeking
scholarship assistance. However, I was able to give only a very
minimum amount from” villagetocollegefdn.org” to 50 students. I wish a
few more people from Barkur who are residing overseas come forward to
help these needy village students’ especially assist female students
from remote villages those are eagerly waiting to complete a college
degree.
This year I personally went to Barkur and gave them these small
scholarships and it was very gratifying to see their happy faces with
a big smile in return, giving them this small help.
Glad to see very encouraging words from Deepak Shetty from Tokyo .
Hope qualified students will take his kind offer to better their
future.

Yes Deepak, the just on line Shettigar is a role model, who invoked a
sort euphoria to follow his role model.
Most of us sacrifice little we had, many in secret and whom so ever in
dire need. It is also a fact, without someone’s help no one has come
up in life, some way or the other. Social living revolves around this
principle.
Let me appreciate Barkur On line for its wonderful display of rare
people of Shettigar’s stature. Surely I wonder how small places like
Barkur a place for so many such great men!!!
Religion also a business for some. Recognition is must. I find no
wrong in displaying their names or calling the Hall, temple, school
after them or donors kith and kin or their ancestors, if they bear the
cost. Many do it with respect and few were convinced by others to go
for it, in a way that brings name or fame, whether you want it or not.
Let us continue the sense of social responsibility, towards the fellow
brethren, the way Deepak, Shettigar are doing in their respective
means and ways. And also this web site which highlights such acts
deserves all appreciation.
M.M.Alvares.20/05/2008.
One thing I observed in
the last 2 or 3 years, that there is no dearth of finance for the
restoration of temples/churches/mosques! If you see the news papers or
banners in and around undivided Dakshina Kannada district you will
find two three renovations, restorations, re-installations and re
building of temples, churches and mosques of everyday. Most of these projects are undertaken with
average budgets over Rs One crore and above!
I doubt if similar
financial assistance is provided for if somebody approaches the same
donors with causes like education, shelter, clean water or road
development. Any thoughts ?
Kishoo,
Barkur, 19/05/2008
Dear Mr.James,
First of all thanks for the feedback. I was wondering whether my
thoughts were completely wrong as nobody replied.
In fact my question was for persons working in corporate world.
Especially in IT, mechanical field, telecommunication field etc. I
know how a fresh engineer would struggle to get an opening once he
comes out of college. I myself have gone through that. Now many
Barkurians are in good positions in Industry. Many are Project
Mangers, PL, Managers etc. They are all in a position where they can
recruit people. So, such people can surely help a junior. That is my
thinking.
Just to answer your question, Yes.. I can get a job for a CAD/CAM
engineer in Japan. If any Engineer with 3-4 year of experience, with
good knowledge on Catia and Pro-E, also with little knowledge on
Japanese Language, will surely get him a job here. In fact I can guide
him in attaining those skills too. Let me know, if anybody interested.
Also just want to tell u that I have already placed 2 persons from ITI
(Barkur) in my company (Toyota India). Also got jobs for another 3-4
Engineers too. (Hope I am not talking too much on what little work I
have done)
Anyway, if other Engineers in Corporate world think and take a lead
on, that would surely help many Junior Barkurians. Expecting some more
replies...

Deepak Shetty,
Japan, 19/05/2008
Yes, Mr. Deepak Shetty, if each one of us were to help a junior,
Barkur would have regained its past glory, by now. If each one were
to clean and green their own yard, Barkur would have been a Brindavan
today!
But, then, what you are asking has already begun. Mr. VL Roche
started a Industriall Training Institute. Sudhakar Shetty is
supporting the First Grade College. His brother Dharmaraja Shetty has
started an Engineering Complex, besides his chemical plants. Dr.
Gabriel Fernandes has started a Scholarship program helping quite a
few children. Mr. Shettigar has employed over 100 people. Some of
the local people do not want to wet their feet in paddy fields, even
though there are plenty of such jobs are open in Moodahadu Village, a
part of Barkur Complex. There are so many private institutes in Barkur
alone catering thousands of local and neighboring children. How do I
know all this? Because, I login three times a day in Barkuronline.com,
started by the son-of-soil, Kishore Gonsalves, to know what is going
on. Yes, hundreds of people login to know what is going on, but not
many contribute a few lines to make it go-on the goings on. Did
anyone reply to your request for a dialogue, so far? Yes, sir, nobody
was there to kill the tiger, but once killed, there will be many to
share the glory as if they killed the tiger with their bare hands!
Anyway, people do help each other one way or the other. Obviously,
charity begins at home. In the past the parents used to produce at
least one physician in a family. But then the other siblings could
not even afford to finish high school. Thus they confronted the
parents for partiality within the family. The physician says, they had
no brains to study! These siblings end up working for this physician
for less than minimum wages 12 hours a day! If these siblings were to
work for larger corporations they would have been covered for medical
insurance, retirement benefit plans etc. Yes, sir the big physicians
really help their siblings. Just as, you desired.
By the way, Mr. Shetty, can you offer a job to a Barkurian IT
professional in Tokyo? Just asking ashte!
One can not only help the other Barkurian, but just 0.5% of the
profits made could be given to restore the Majestic Temples of Barkur.
Can you sir? Yes, you can. There will be a sign at the entrance of a
temple, “This temple is standing on it’s four walls, because of the
donations of Mr. Deepak Shetty and Family.” You will be reminded of
this every time you shower! You may thank me after 7 years when this
sign is put up. There are another 351 temples in Barkur, Any
volunteers?
To practice charity one does not have to empty one’s bank balance. My
mother used to keep one fistful of raw rice for charity every time or
most of the time, she placed the mud rice pot for boiling. Just a
fistful of rice once or twice a day, can add up to more than a ‘mudi’
in a year. This could be a big help in the neighborhood. I still
collect my change coins in a glass jar, yes it does add up.
Similarly, one can have jars (or bank accounts!) for wedding fund,
college fund, birthday fund, Temple fund, etc., thus financial pinch
can be mitigated!
OK, ideas are free, but not many want to share even some anyway. When
I light a second candle, the light from my candle does not diminish.
Does anyone know where the darkness goes when a candle is lit? There
is no such thing as darkness, only the absence of light! Thanks
folks.

My hearty Congratz to
Mr. Shettigar. We all should acknowledge, accept and appreciate his
achievements. In a small place like Barkur, he has achieved so much.
He had that talent to recognize the " Business Potential" in that
small town and he explored that opportunity very well. Giving
appointment for 100 people is really great. 100 people means
supporting 100 family.. Really great.
In fact this one area
where all of us should learn from Mr. Shettigar. Almost all of us are
doing well in our field. But apart from earning and learning, are we
helping our Juniors from Barkur?? Many of us say "NO". Then what are
we doing for our Birth place being in Corporate world? If all of us
decide "we all will get job for one of our junior" then it will be
a great help for new graduates from Barkur. Can we think on this and
do something on this?? Expecting comments from other Barkurians on
this. Cheeeerrrss
