Mrs. Nancy Menezes and Mr. Henry Lewis were felicitated by
Kundapur Varado Welfare Association. Kuwait.

The President of Kundapur Varado Welfare Association (KVWA), Mrs.
Nancy Menezes and Mr. Henry Lewis were felicitated for being
elected as the Chairperson and General Secretary of Kuwait Canara
Konkan Community (KCKC) respectively. KCKC, an organization, with
an initiative to bring all Mangalorean Welfare Associations in
Kuwait
under one roof, to bond brotherhood and unity.
KCKC includes, Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA), Kanajar
Welfare Association Kuwait (KWAK), Shirva Welfare Association
Kuwait (SWAK), Kuwait Pangla Association (KPA), Belle Vision
Kuwait,
Kundapur Varado Welfare Association (KVWA) and other
Associations.
Mrs. Nancy Menezes is a diligent and zealous individual, bestowed
with the best of human qualities. Under her leadership, the KVWA
has grown tremendously. Her contribution towards community
service, are significant. With all these good values, the
Mangalorean Associations in
Kuwait
rightly have chosen her as the Chairperson of KCKC. She is the
2nd Chairperson of KCKC.
Mr. Henry Lewis who is the Public Relations Officer of KVWA has
been chosen as the General Secretary of KCKC. Mr. Lewis was also a
member of KCO Abu Dhabi and Konkan Hearts, Sakinaka Mumbai. He has
a PG diploma in Konkani from St. Aloysius College Mangalore. His
keen interest to support social causes and his ambitions to unite
all organizations is noteworthy. Under his guidance and
administration, the Konkani Community will prosper with added
flavor.
The felicitation ceremony started with a prayer by Mrs. Carol
Martis. The new office bearers of KCKC from KVWA i.e. Mrs. Menezes
and Mr. Lewis were then presented with flower bouquets by Mrs.
Jacinta Fernandes and Mr. Melvin Crasta.
Mrs. Nancy Menezes and Mr. Henry Lewis then thanked the committee
for their unrelenting support and hard work and expressed their
willingness to serve the Community. The programme concluded at
11a.m.
with the vote of thanks by Mr. David Lewis.

Menezes, President of Kundapur Varado Welfare Association Kuwait
for 2005, Mr. Henry Lewis as the General Secretary for KCKC he is
also from KVWA and Mr. Nithin Castelino from Shirva Welfare
Association Kuwait as the Treasurer for KCKC. KCKC is an unity of
Mangalorean Konkani Associations in Kuwait formed to have a common
cultural event. All the Konkani Mangalorean Associations are
invited to take part. This year it is decided to have a Picnic

OBITUARY
MARGARET LOBO
(92), wife of the late Thomas Lobo, and mother of Rosy/late
Victor, Felcy/Roque, Urban/Victoria, Fr Charles SDB, Sr Rosario
DSP, and Richard/Noreen, passed away on January 30. Funeral took
place at the Church of St Peter, Barkur at 4-00 pm
on Monday, January 31.

Feb. ’05.
Claud D’Souza to perform
Bendur Families, Kuwait, are going to celebrate “Parish Feast
2005” on 4th Feb. ’05 at Indian English Academy School
auditorium (Don Bosco), Salmiya from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Konkan Kalaashri Claud D’souza, Bendur, is all set to perform
his latest Konkani numbers along with leading local singers Rony
D’cunha, Vishwas Rebimbus, Jovita Fernandes and Muriel Mascarenhas.
Comedy skit “Keppyachim Kesthavam”, written by Mr. Claud
D’souza, will also be played on this occasion by leading local
artists. Various dances, jokes, DJ music, lucky draws and prizes
galore will be other attractions of the day. The program will also
include a sumptuous mangalorean lunch. Mr. Leslie Miranda,
Bendur, will be flying all the way from Abu Dhabi to compere the
show.
Limited entry passes are available. Last day to collect your
passes will be on 25th Jan. No passes will be
issued at the venue.

Gabriel Fernandes, Ph.D., professor of medicine in the division of
clinical immunology, has been invited to serve on the Aging
Systems and Geriatrics Study Section of the National Institutes of
Health/Center for Scientific Review. His term runs through June
2008.
Dr. Fernandes was nominated because of his demonstrated competence
and achievement in his scientific discipline as evidenced by the
quality of his research accomplishments, publications in
scientific journals and ther significant scientific activities,
achievements and honors.
Dr. Fernandes, a native of
India and naturalized U.S. citizen, has made important discoveries
about Omega-3 fatty acids and immune function related to
autoimmune diseases such as lupus and renal disease. “My ongoing
work is also calorie restriction and aging, and I am a member of
the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging
Studies,” he said.
Dr. Fernandes has served on two previous NIH Study Sections. He
was an invited member of the Gerontology and Geriatrics Review
Committee of the National Institute on Aging, 1985-89. His second
appointment was to the Nutrition Study Section, NIH/Center for
Scientific Review, 1996-2000.
Dr. Fernandes came to the
Health Science Center faculty in 1981 from the
Sloan-Kettering
Memorial Cancer Center, where he was an assistant professor. He
has held NIH grant funding continuously since 1980 and currently
holds two RO1 grants from NIH.
