Tragedy strikes, three of a family die in accident.

In a macabre accident that occurred close to Kambadakone bridge near Byndoor at around 3.35 pm on Wednesday September 3, three from a family died while the other is in serious condition. Another brother named Ramanna Shetty who was travelling with the unfortunate siblings, escaped unhurt.

Brothers Gundu Shetty(62), Subbanna Shetty(58) and Bhujanga Shetty(50) from Nagarmutt Barkur, who were returning to their native place after immersing the ashes of their mother Akkamma Shedthi who passed away recently, in the sea waters at Gokarna, lost their life after the Maruti Alto car in which the four brothers were travelling, hit a road side tree. Krishnaiah Shetty, one of the brothers who runs a resturant, was at the wheels at the time of the accident. He survived with grievous injuries. He is being treated at Manipal Hospital.

It is said, that the family had gone to Gokarna in two separate vehicles. While the five brothers were returning in one car, the women folk of the family along with children, were believed to be coming back in another vehicle.

After Krishnaiah Shetty lost control of the vehicle for reasons unknown, the car swerved towards a gorge and hit a tree while hurtling down. Initially, all the four were injured critically. However, Bhujanga Shetty and Subbanna Shetty died while being taken to Chimnaya Hospital in Kundapur. Gundu Shetty died while being taken to Manipal Hospital, the police said.

The car has been badly mangled in the accident. A case has been registered with the Byndoor police in this connection.

Blood Donation Drive at Barkur College

Rotary Club and Rotaract Club Barkur, Chavana Diagnostic Research Center, Udupi and Youth Red Cross Group of Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Government First Grade College Barkur  jointly conducted the Blood Camp Program for Students recently at the college  campus. This program was sponsored by B M Krishna Contractor. Rajshekar Hebbar, Principal of the college inaugurated the camp. The function was presided over by K. Ganesh Vakuda, President Rotary Club Barkur. B M Krishna contractor was Chief Guest of the Program. Many students actively participated in the camp. 

Students' Council  inaugurated  and  Talents  Day Celebrated at Barkur College 

The Students’ Council  for the current academic year was inaugurated and Talents Day of Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National First Grade College Barkur  was celebrated on 18th August 2008 at Srinivasa Hall,  Sankamma Thaayi Resorts, Hanenalli, Barkur.

The Students’ Council was  inaugurated by B. Bujanga Shetty, Ex-President Udupi Jilla Panchayath. K.K Nayak, Retired director of the State Treasury, Karnataka Government, inaugurated the Talents Day Celebration. The Function was presided by Prof. Rajshekar Hebbar Principal of the College. The prizes  and shields of the talents day were sponsored by Syndicate Bank, Barkur branch.           

Informative Program on Law and its awareness

District Bar Association and Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National Government First Grade College Barkur jointly conducted the Law awareness and Information Program recently at College Auditorium. The Program was started with prayer, sung by  Ashwini, Anitha, Divya, and Srilatha. Ganesh.M. Pai department of history welcomed the gathering. And there after K.N Fanindra, Udupi district Judge, inaugurated the program.

Chief guests  B. Shivalinge Gouda, M.M Ramachandrayya, Chief Civil Judge and Mattar Rathnakar Hegde, President Udupi Bar Association gave talks on law  focusing on  F.I.R. and criminal cases.

Brain behind this program was Ronald Praveen Correa, Lecturer and the officer  in charge of Red Cross Society at the college. Function was presided over by Mr. Rajshekar Hebbar, Principal of the college. Krishnamurthy, Lecturer, Department of Economics proposed the vote of thanks . Nagaraj Vaidhya M, Lecturer in the  Department of Kannada, conducted the proceedings.       

Ivan Rebello and Rolph Monteiro as SEO in Metro

The Maharshtra State Government appointed Ivan M Rebello and Rolph B Monteiro, originally from Barkur, as special executive officers (SEO), in the metro.

Ivan M Rebello has been serving as the honorary chief secretary of St Peter’s Association of Barkur in the metro, since the past several years. He is from Barkur, and has also served there as ICYM president in the local parish. He now manages Naval Store, located at Fort, here and resides at Rose Nagar, Naigaon, in Vasai taluk. Rebello is also a member of the managing committee of Naigaon Citizens' Forum.

Rolph Monteiro, also from Barkur, has been striving for the prosperity of his native village and the St Peter’s Association in the metro. Both are actively involved in managing Rose Nagar Co-operative Housing Society.

Independence day celebrated at Barkur Church

Independence day was celebrated at St.Peter's Church Barkur.Rev Fr RCM Aranha hoisted the flag at the church ground soon after the mass. Dr.Manoj D'Lima, President ICYM Udupi District was the chief guest.

Dr.Manoj D'Lima was felicitated by flower bouquet by the parish priest on behalf of Barkur parishioners for being elected as the the president ICYM Udupi District.

Dr.D'Lima expressed his thoughts about the India's independence and youth. He gave a call to the youth to be proactive and make use of all the opportunities that were given to them.

Sweets were distributed to all by the members of ICYM, sponsored by Dr. Manoj D'Lima.

Safe Drinking water facility inaugurated at Nadoor School

 

The Safe drinking water facility donated by Dhananjaya Shetty, Administrator of Mandarthi Shri Durga Parameshwari Temple was inaugurated by the well wisher of the school Veeranna Shetty at Nadoor Shri Vani Haigh School, Nadoor, Barkur.

In the recently held inter College cultural competitions, under the auspices of Crosland First grade College Chantar, Brahmmmvar, Prajeeta, of Barkur College secured Second place in Kannada Elocution Competitions, while Alvas College Moodubidre bagged over all champion trophy.

In a surprising SMS mailed to the Congress leaders of the Udupi District, Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj, who contested un-successfully from the Brahmmavar Assembly constituency in 2004 and from Udupi in 2008, on Congress tickets, declared that he will out of electoral politics but continue as a social worker, in the wake of two consecutive defeats.

Free Books and Uniforms distributed at Hanehalli 

Free books and uniforms were distributed to the students of Hanehalli Higher Primary School by the joint donations of Sankamma Thayi Resorts, Hanehalli, Rotary Club, Barkur and Former Student’s Association of the school.

Students Association Inaugurated at English Medium School 

"Books are the true friends and they give you good suggestions as the true friends. Everybody should cultivate the habit of reading good books which develop the personality" said S. Nithyananda Padre, sub editor of the popular Kannada daily Udayavani. He was delivering his inaugural speech after inaugurating the Student's association for the current academic year at Shri Vidyesha Vidyamanya National English Medium School at Heradi, Barkur.

MVR Acharya, Principal presided over the function. President Sudarshana Udupa, Vice President Sadashiva, Sports Secretary Ganesh Aithal, Cultural secretary Uthsav Shetty, Health Secretary Shrikanth Kamath took oath as the office bearers of the association.

In a press release, Principal Raj Shekhar Hebbar announced that, from this coming academic year, 2008 – 09, post graduate courses in Commerce and Social work will commence, in the  Smt. Rukmini Shedti National Govt. First Grade College, Barkur, affiliated to Mangalore University. 

Applications may please be obtained from the College Office, from the aspiring graduates, and the last date of receipt of the same is 08/08/2008.

Obituary

Charles Dias, Kachur, Barkur, aged 70 years, husband of Faustine, father of Fareena/Deepak Sequeira (Abu Dhabi), Melani, grandfather of Denora, passed away on 30th July morning after a brief illness.

Funeral is at the church of St.Peter, Barkur on 31st July evening.

Awareness camp about the deceases

A seminar was organized at Sauharda Auditorium at St. Peter’s Church compound to inculcate awareness on deadly deceases like Chkoongunya, Dengue fever and Malaria, that shown its dangerous tentacles in Coastal districts, which claimed more than 50 precious lives, in the recent two months.

The programme initiated to educate the local people was organized jointly by the ICYM Barkur, Benne Kudru Youvaka Sangha, Udupi District Health and Family welfare board and the Primary Health Centre Barkur, was inaugurated by the Parish Priest Fr.Remigious Aranha, by lighting the lamp.

Among others, Dr.Subramanya Prabhu, Dr. Ramya R.Nayak, Dr. Sudhindra Sooda were the main resource personalities present on the occasion.

Fr.Sylvester D'Souza passed away

Rev Fr Sylvester D’Souza (80), Vianny Home, Mangalore, former parish priest of St.Peter’s Church, Barkur passed away on Wednesday July 23, 2008. Funeral Mass at St Vincent Ferrer Church, Valencia, Mangalore on Friday July 25 at 4 pm.

 Fr  was born at Shirtadi Anegudde on October 28, 1928 and ordained as a priest of Mangalore diocese on February 2, 1957, breathed his last at Father Muller's Hospital Mangalore after a brief illness.

The late Fr Sylvester D'Souza, after being ordained into the priesthood, functioned as assistant priest at Kinnigoly, as chaplain at St Cicily Udupi and a parish priest at Pius Nagar, Shirva, Karkala town and Barkur, before retiring on May 24, 2004. Thereafter, he spiritually served Mt Rosary Institute of Moodbidri-Alangar for four years before settling down at 'Vinanni Home' Mangalore, the home for the retired priests.

He was the eldest of seven children of Antony and Lucy D'Souza from Shirtadi. Another of his brothers Fr John Cyrian D'Souza is serving as priest at Kolkata. Fr Sylvester had great love and concern for the children. He set up AICUFF in Mangalore and through it, provided proper guidance to thousands of youth. He played a major role in setting up Don Bosco Club in Udupi and had built 'Christ Church' for the people coming to Manipal from all over the country and abroad. He was very active in inter-community related issues and debates.

Barkur parishioners  celebrated his 75th birthday at Barkur on 28th October 2003 when he was serving as a Parish Priest at Barkur. ICYM Barkur celebrated its Silver Jubilee celebrations for 3 days under his directorship and guidance and its him who inaugurated this website on the day of launching the Silver Jubilee year.

The final rites of Fr Sylvester will be held at Valencia church on Friday, July 25 at 4 pm.
