Shri Vidyesha Vidyamanya National English Medium School , Barkur

The annual day of Shri Vidyesha Vidyamanya National English Medium School , Barkur was celebrated recently. Mr. V.L. Roche, President, Barkur Vidyabhivardhini Sangha ® , presided over the function.

Mr.H.R.Shetty, Auditor, Mangalore, Mr.Rathnakar Shetty , Asst. Forest Officer, Mr. S. Vasanth Shetty, Zonal Educational Officer, Udupi North Zone, Brahmavar, B. Shantharama Shetty, President, Grama Panchayath were the chief guests.

Mr. Rathnakar Shetty announced Mr.Sankady Krishnappa Shetty memorial Permanent Fund at this occasion.

Chief guests distributed the prizes to the winners of the various cultural and sports competitions. Mr. Ramadasa Thanthri, Ms.Sulekha and Head Master Mr.M.V.R. Acharya were felicitated for their services rendered to the school.

Dr.B.M.Somayaji, Secretary, Administration Committee welcomed the gathering. Head Master, Mr. MVR Acharya presented the annual report. Mr. Prakash Acharya read out the messages. Mr. Raghavendra Shetty proposed the vote of thanks and Mr.Prakash Hebbar conducted the proceedings.

Various cultural and entertainment programmes  those followed were presented by the Primary and high school students , conducted by Miss. Chaithra A. Hegde.

Obituary

Mr.Lawrence Fernandes, Pandeshwar, Nagermutt,Aged 89 years, Husband of  Veronica Fernandes, father of Helen/Cyprian D’Souza, Late Julia Fernandes, Treeza Fernandes, Sr.Jacintha Fernandes, Joseph/Shanthi Fernandes, Olivia/Urban Lewis, Maria/Herald D’Silva, Claretta/Richard Aroza, Reena/Anil D’Souza breathed his last , today morning (03/02/2006).

Funeral will be held  tomorrow (04/02/2006) 4 p.m. at St.Peter’s Church, Barkur.

Silver Cover to Ayyappa Swami at Barkur.

“Temples have been the cultural centers from the long past. They have been the centers for education and justice because of the generosity of the people. He was delivering the presidential address on the occasion of presenting the Silver cover to the Ayyappa Swami belonging to the  temples of families of  Barkur Rangankeri Rathnagarbha Ganapathi  and Mahalingeshwara.

Mr.Heggunje Govinda Shetty, President Rotary , Barkur presented the Silver cover. Entrepreneurs Mr. N. Bhojaraj Shetty, Mr.B. Jaru Poojari were the chief guests. Donors Mr.Heggunje Govinda Shetty and Mr. Manjunatha Shetty were felicitated at this occasion.

Co operative Leadership camps at Barkur.

Inspiration camps for men and Awareness Camps for women were conducted at Barkur in the joint particiapation of the Barkur-Heradi Milk Producers Co-operative Association and D.K. District Milk Federation.

Mr.Udaya Bhaskara Shetty of Mandarthi Shri Durga Parameshwari High School was the resource person for the Inspiration Camp for Men where as Ms. Indira Chandra, Udupi central Secretary was the resource person for Awareness Camp for Women. Mr. Nagayyya Shety, President , Barkur-Heradi Milk Producers Co-operative Association presided over the function. Mr. G.P. Surendra Shetty was the chief guest. Ms. Prameela Bhat introduced the camps to the participants. Ms.Geetha welcomed while Ms. Thulasi conducted the proceedings.

Makkala Sahithya Sammelana, Inagurated.

She was delivering the inaugural address, after inaugurating the 6th Children’s’ Literary Convention, at the Keerthishesha Purushotthamanandaji Sahithya Vedike at National Pre University College, Barkur.

Makkala Sahithya Sammelana, - the Children’s Literary Convention jointly  organized by Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center , Barkur , Shanthivana Trust, Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala and Shri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Belgaum and Mangalore , consistently for the 6th year  was inaugurated  on 28th February at 03.30 pm.

Miss Sandhya,Koteshwara, President of the Literary Convention presided over the inaugural function. Mr. S. Vasanth Shetty, Zonal Educational Officer, Udupi North Zone, Brahmavar, and Mrs. Savitha D’Souza, Project Officer, Shri Dharmasthala Village Development Project, Udupi  were the chief guests. President of the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, Barkur Mr.B.M. Krishna Poojari, Mr.K. Raghavendra R. Pai of Vedavyasa Yoga Prathisthana, Nrithya Vidushi Miss Sushma Kamath, Barkur, and Young Writer Mr. Narendra Kumar, Kota and Mr.Shettigar, Vice President, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, Barkur were present on the dais.

Initially the guests of honor were brought to the stage in a procession lead by the School Band and welcomed with the Poorna Kumbha Swagatha. Mr.Shettigar, Vice President, Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, Barkur welcomed the gathering followed by a beautifully choreographed welcome dance by Miss. Pallavi and Miss Akshatha.

Two new books, both the collection of poems, by Miss Shravya, Kumbhashi and Miss Sandhya Koteshwara were released by Mr. S. Vasanth Shetty, Zonal Educational Officer, Udupi North Zone, Brahmavar.

Mr. Raghavendra R. Pai of Vedavyasa Yoga Prathisthana, Nrithya Vidushi Miss Sushma Kamath, Barkur , and Young Writer Mr. Narendra Kumar , Kota were felicitated at this occasion recognizing their exceptional talents. Five students from the district schools, who are selected for the national level yoga competitions, Mashesh Poojari, Vijetha, Prakash Kumar, Sandeep and Ranjitha were also felicitated.

 Delivering the presidential address, Miss Sandhya Koteshwara stressed on developing the self confidence to be successful in the life. Mr. Rama Bhat Sajangadde, B.Yogeesh, Miss Sangeetha compeered the programme. Miss Harshitha Joshi proposed the vote of thanks.

Kavita Agneta Gonsalves bags Gold Medal

Kavita Agneta Gonsalves from Barkur origin was awarded the Dr. T. M. A. Pai Gold Medal for securing the first rank in the class based on performance in all the semesters of the Bachelor of Architecture course completed during the year 2005. She was awarded her degree and medal by Dr. Ramdas Pai, Chancellor MAHE.

When asked what her thoughts were as she was receiving her medal, she said, “It was a moment of pride for my family and for me. The five years of hard toil finally paid off. I finally graduated to be an Architect. I was eagerly waiting for the graduation day, when I would wear the cloak and cap and receive my degree and also the gold medal in the limelight. Finally I’m a graduate.”

Kavita A Gonsalves, the proud daughter of Lucy and Thaddeus Gonsalves (Barkur) and sister of Ryan (Mumbai), Melissa (USA) and Joshua residing in Bahrain and  is currently employed in Bangalore. She has already been involved in many major projects. This young achiever has made a name for herself in the field of Architecture & Design.

The Annual Convocation of Manipal Academy of Higher Education was held on Saturday, 21st January 2006 at KMC Greens, Manipal. Candidates were  awarded the degrees on the dias by Dr. Ramdas Pai, Chancellor MAHE. Dr. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Chairman of the University Grants Commission and Dr. Vijay L. Kelkar, Chairman of IDFC Pvt. Equity Co. Ltd.

Special Postal Cover and Special Cancellation Rubber Stamp

Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association is organizing the District Level (DK and Udupi District) Philatelic Exhibition , KARAVALIPEX-2006 0n 11th and 12th   February at the Shesha Shayana Hall, Hotel Kediyoor, Udupi.

The association is bringing out a Special Postal Cover featuring a picture of the historical Kallu Chappara of Barkur with the permission from postal authorities of India.

The Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association is a reputed association and released many such special covers in the past in association with postal department and is proud to bring out these special covers and cancellation stamp on the historically famous Barkur.

According to the organizers, 1000 exclusive  cards will be produced , which are expected to be sold to the enthusiastic collectors over the world. President of the Children’s Literary Convention Miss Sandhya, Koteshwara

Miss Sandhya, Koteshwara, is selected as the president of the 6th Children’s Literary Convention organized by Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center with the co operation of Shanthivana Trust, Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala and Shri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Belgaum and Mangalore, scheduled on 28th and 29th of February  at Keerthishesha Swami Purushotthamanandaji Sahithya Vedike, National Pre University College, Barkur.

A 10th standard student from  Viveka Girls’ High School, Miss Sandhya has already carved a niche for herself in the literary world by her numerous self written poems. Her first book , a collection of her poems named “Haaduva Hakkiya Modala Thodala Nudi” is released couple of years back.

She has recorded remarkable achievements in the field of  Public Speaking, Dance, Dramatics, Art and literature at her tender age. She has also bagged the second rank in the state level in  the 6th international science exam. She presided over the Kavigoshti in the literary convention in the year 2003 and also participated as a resource person in the seminars conducted by many organizations.

Children’s Literary Convention

Makkala Sahithya Sammelana, - the Children’s Literary Convention organized by Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center, consistently for the 6th year  is scheduled on 28th and 29th of February  at Keerthishesha Swami Purushotthamanandaji Sahithya Vedike, National Pre University College, Barkur. Shanthivana Trust, Shri Kshethra Dharmasthala and Shri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Belgaum and Mangalore are the co-organizers of this mega event.

The inauguration of the convention  will be on 28th February , Saturday at 03.30 pm. by Mrs. Sandhya S. Pai , Managing Editor, Tharanga weekly, Manipal.  Miss Sandhya,Koteshwara, President of the Literary Convention will preside over the inaugural function. Mr. S. Vasanth Shetty, Zonal Educational Officer, Udupi North Zone, Brahmavar, Mr.B. Seetharama Tholpaditthaya, Secretary, Shanthivana Trust, Shri Kshethra Dharmasathala, and Mrs. Savitha D’Souza, Project Officer, Shri Dharmasthala Village Development Project, Udupi  will be chief guests.

The convention will be concluded on 29th February at 03.00 pm with presidential address by Miss Sandhya, Koteshwara, President of the Literary Convention and the valedictory address by Mr. Narendra Rai Derla, Lecturer, Shivarama Karantha Government First Grade College, Bellare, Sullia. Mr. I. Shashikanth Jain, Yoga Director, Shanthivana Trust, Shri Kshethra Dharmasathala will distribute the Certificates.

Various sessions on Poetry, Dramatics and Literature are planned for both the days with  the interaction of many resource persons in these fields with the child participants of the convention.

Tragic death of father and daughter duo at Barkur.

In a shocking and mysterious act, a father-daughter duo was found hanging from the roof the house at Rangankere of Barkur here on Sunday January 15 afternoon.

Ramesh Mogaveera (38) and his daughter Ramya (3) were found hanging in their room at around 3.45 in the evening.  They had gone to their room after the lunch.  Ramesh's wife Malati had gone to Mumbai a week ago on some urgent work.  Ramesh was living in his house with his mother and sister.

On Sunday afternoon they had their lunch together. After that Ramesh and Ramya had gone to their room. The suicide came to light only in the evening after Ramesh's mother and sister had got up from a siesta.  Nothing more is known about the act.  The suicide has surprised everyone, as there were no visible signs of tension or distress in Ramesh.

Malati is yet to return from Mumbai and only after her arrival a complaint would be lodged in the Brahmavar police station in this regard.  Right now the dead bodies have been kept in the government hospital at Brahmavar.

Maruthi Omni Van donated to Barkur ITI

Mr.B.D.Shetty, M.D. of Dharmavaram Auditorium and Resorts and the President of the "Brahmavar-Barkur Citizens' Forum" recently donated a Maruthi Omni Van to the Automobile section of the National I.T.I. run by Barkur Vidyabhivardhini Sangha, Barkur.

It was received in a function by Dr. B.M. Somayaji, Secretary, Barkur Vidyabhivardhini Sangha, Mr. Sathyanarayan Udupa, Joint Secretary, Mr.B. Vishwanath Shetty, Correspondent and Mr. Dinakar Tholar, Principal.

Mr. B. D. Shetty was represented by his brothers Mr. Shekhar Shetty and Mr.S.B. Shetty.

Shri Kachoor Malthi Devi Festival

The annual festivities of the historical Shri kachoor Malthi Devi and Shri Babbuswami Moolakshethra celebrated on 14th and 15th January at Kachoor, Barkur.

On 14th January night, thousands of devotees from all over undivided Dakshina Kannada district participated Bailakere Deepothsava and Gendothsva in what is believed to be their origin or their Moolakshethra. Various organisations presented the cultural programs through out the night.

MLA, Mr. K. Raghupathi Bhat inaugurated the Dharmika Sabha , presided over by Mr. B. Shantharama Shetty, President, Barkur Panchayath. Ex M.P. Mr. I. M. Jayarama Shetty, Entrepreneur Mr. Pramod Madhwaraj, Ex Jilla Panchayath President Dr. Vanajakshi and other dignitaries were the chief guests.

Devotees performed  Darshana Seve, Thulabhara Seve and took part in Maha Anna Santharpane on 15th January.

SAD DEMISE – SIMON BANZ – SANKADY BARKUR.

Simon Banz, 73 years, Sankady, Barkur – Eldest Son of Late Mr. Santhan and Joanna Banz, Elder Brother of Mr. Felix Banz, Mulund Mumbai and Flora Furtado, New Bombay, Husband of Late Mrs. Juliana Furtado, Nagermutt, Barkur, Father of Derrick - Mumbai, Darryl - Sastan, Cynthia – Bhadaragiri – Brahmmavar, Dolphy - Sankady and Silvia – Nasik, and ex employee of Bombay Port Trust, BPT, Mumbai, breathed his last this morning at 6.30 a.m. i.e. 15th January, 2006.

Funeral details will be informed later.

Pedruchi Chaavi Released.

The long awaited December issue of Pedruchi Chavi was released on 8th January 2006 at St. Peter’s Church after a delay due to the festive season work load at the printing press.

This issue is releasing after 6 months after the number of issues reduced to 2 per year in the Parish council meeting. The main sponsors for this issue are the Barkurians settled in Kuwait.

Copies are being posted to non resident Barkurians and those who have not received their copy are requested to contact parish office.

Sathish  Poojari of Congress wins the Election

We heard from our sources that Mr. Sathish Poojari of Congress I Party won the Udupi Taluk Panchayath seat defeating the 2 independent and one JD candidate. While awaiting more details , we congratulate  Mr. Poojari and wish all the best in the coming years.

Inauguration of JAE'S WHEEL MASTERS

Young entrepreneur of famous  Jae’s Wheels Masters, Udupi  Mr. Praveen Carvalho, Kachoor, Barkur is expanding  his business. On NH 17 near Bhadragiri Cross Road, a new ultra modern garage is inaugurated on 12th December, 2005.Energetic partner of Mr. Naveen Dais, Hanehalli, Barkur is the in charge of the new outlet.

It is appropriate to call back our memories that, about 8 years ago, Mr.Praveen Carvalho started Jae’s Wheel masters’, first of its kind in the Coastal lines and in Udupi District offering computerized wheel alignment, wheel balancing and automatic tyre changing and sales of all brands of tyres and allied services.

Maryknoll Higher primary School Day celebrations

It was a day to remember the past 63 years. It was the day to thank all those who were responsible for the development of Maryknoll, who gave life to it, as it celebrated the Annual Day.

At 9.30 am after receiving the salute from the band group and guard of honour from the students Mr  Stany Pais the award winning entrepreneur  in the field of sales at Barkur hoisted the flag in the presence of correspondent Rev Fr Remezius Aranha, parents and well wishers ,followed by  the mass drill, message to the assembly and thanks giving.

At 5 pm sharp in the evening  at the call of MC school band welcomed the president  and the guest with a royal salute and thereafter took them to the stage. After the invocation, gathering was welcomed by the correspondent Rev Fr Remegius Aranha . A brief report  on the activities was given by the Headmistress Sr. Irene. Prizes were distributed to the winners in the school competitions .

Nrithya Vidushi Kumari Sushma Kamath ,  former student of the school, Kumari Vijetha Kamath a budding Bharathanatyam dancer currently studying in the school and Mrs. Josephine D’Lima , the teacher to be retired this year were felicitated.

The entertainment programme that followed was well received by the audience and had every child from the school participating in it. The overcrowded gathering was thrilled to see the tiny tots performing.

The school authorities thank God for His marvels, and  crave showers of blessings on  all the students , parents and well wishers.
