Barkur: With the guiding theme "The wisdom of our elders is our treasure, their faith is our inspiration," the Family Commission of our parish, under the leadership of the Parish Priest, celebrated Senior Citizens' Day today, Sunday, August 2, 2026.

From 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., all senior citizens above the age of seventy were given the opportunity for confession, allowing them to gain spiritual solace and peace of mind. The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Leo Praveen D'Souza, Diocesan Director of the Basic Ecclesial Community and Assistant Parish Priest of Udupi Parish. He was co-celebrated by our Parish Priest, Fr. Ronald Miranda. Following confession, all the senior citizens received Jesus into their hearts through Holy Communion. After Mass, an anointing (blessing) ceremony was conducted for all the elderly parishioners.

In a special gesture during the program, three parishioners who were celebrating their birthdays that day had a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the joyous occasion. Mrs. Sarita Quadras, Coordinator of the Family Commission, welcomed the gathering. Young children delighted everyone's hearts by performing a welcome dance. Members of the commission also staged two short skits for the entertainment and enrichment of the audience.

Mrs. Charlotte Vaz addressed the elders with valuable and necessary guidance on how to preserve their sweet words and gentle manner of speech as they advance in age. A quiz competition was also conducted right at the seats where the senior citizens were seated, adding a fun and interactive element to the celebrations.

As tokens of remembrance for all senior citizens above the age of seventy, two families sponsored gifts for the occasion. The Parish Priest explained to the gathered elders the significance and importance of the day, and extended his warm wishes to them. Generous-hearted donors also extended their support to make the day's program a success. A delicious meal brought satisfaction and joy to all who attended.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Joseph Fernandes, Coordinator of the Pastoral Council's Family Commission. Joseph Fernandes, Vice-President of the Parish Pastoral Council, Secretary Sabita Picardo, and other members lent their support and cooperation throughout the event. The program was compered and coordinated by Mrs. Alice D'Souza, a member of the Family Commission.
