Yadagiri, December 14, 2023- In a spectacular display of athleticism, the Udupi District team, primarily composed of NJC Barkur students, clinched the Bronze medal in the Karnataka State level Jump Rope Games competition held in Yadagiri this week, from December 12th to 14th.

The seemingly simple act of jump roping proved to be a challenging feat, requiring immense concentration and focus. The young athletes from NJC, hailing from rural backgrounds, showcased their skills amidst whirling ropes, executing skips, steps, hops, and twirls in perfect synchrony. The competition, governed by specific rules for individual and group events, demanded precision and agility.

Mr. Umesh Shetty, the Physical Education Director, played a pivotal role as the team's Manager, Coach, and Guide. Ms. Shusmitha, Lecturer at NPUC – Barkur, served as the Convenor for the girls' team.

Expressing pride in their achievement, Prof U Kottraswamy, Principal of NPUC, conveyed the congratulations of the Barkur Educational Society, office bearers, staff, students, and the Old Students Association. He hailed the team's exhibition of tact, talent, and outstanding performance at the State level.

Mr. Umesh Shetty, the dynamic and supportive Physical Director, shared insights into the challenging competition. With 31 districts participating from Karnataka, the Udupi contingent of 24 athletes, primarily from NJC Barkur and Jnanasudha PU College Karkala, stood out. Chinmayee Deshpande of Jnanasudha secured the Gold Medal, while Vinoda of National PU College, Barkur, bagged the Bronze Medal in the 30 Seconds Speed category.

The Karnataka State level Athletic Meet, spanning almost five days, featured two categories: Silambam, a martial art involving stick fighting, and Rope Games of various types, practiced across India. Notably, Silambam holds historical significance in Southern India, particularly in Tamil Nadu.

Reflecting on the rich sports legacy of National High School Barkur, which dates back to 1946, the institution has consistently excelled in track and field. Originally in the undivided DK district and now in Udupi, the school has produced players and athletes who have competed at both State and National levels. The well-maintained grounds, infrastructure, and training facilities at the National Campus, coupled with unwavering support from all quarters, have contributed to their continued success.
