Historic 13th Consecutive Year Tournament Begins at NPU Barkur
Barkur, September 20, 2025 – The Udupi District Level Jump Rope Tournament commenced with a vibrant inaugural ceremony at the National Auditorium, which was packed to capacity with athletes, team managers, and sports enthusiasts.
Opening Ceremony Highlights
The ceremony began on an auspicious note with a soulful prayer hymn performed by students, followed by a warm welcome address from Mrs. Usha Kiran Shetty, Principal of NPU. Distinguished guests received floral recognition as part of the traditional reception.
Mr. Archibald Furtado, Administrative Coordinator of the National Group of Educational Institutions, highlighted Barkur's proud legacy as a sporting hub. "Barkur has remained a favorite venue for Hobali, Taluk, and District Level Games Tournaments over the years," he noted, emphasizing that this marks the 13th consecutive year of the Jump Rope Tournament since its introduction in 2012.
Distinguished Guests Address the Gathering
Chief Guest Mrs. Kishori Sachinand Shetty, President of Rotary Club Barkur, formally inaugurated the tournament by lighting the traditional lamp alongside other dignitaries. In her address, she wished success to both organizers and participants, encouraging them to take home valuable experiences from the historically significant town of Barkur.
Guest of Honor Mr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, Secretary of the Barkur Education Society (BES), emphasized the importance of sports in student life. He spoke about how tournaments foster team spirit, cooperation, and lifelong friendships, extending his best wishes to all participating teams from across Udupi District.
Presidential Address by Mr. B. Shantarama Shetty, President of the Barkur Educational Society, welcomed the young athletes to the temple town of Barkur. He expressed pride in hosting the event and reaffirmed the management's commitment to promoting sports and games. He thanked the Rotary Club sponsors and particularly appreciated the efforts of Principal Mrs. Usha Kiran Shetty and Physical Education Director Mr. Umesh Shetty.
Tournament Organization and Legacy
Mr. Umesh Shetty, Physical Education Director at NPU and the mastermind behind the tournament arrangements, expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the event's success. Under his guidance over the past 13 years, NPU Barkur has produced remarkable results: 3 national-level participants, dozens of state-level competitors, and hundreds of district-level tournament participants.
The program was expertly anchored by Ms. Sowmya, Lecturer in Biology, who acknowledged the presence of various teams, managers, and sports enthusiasts for their continued support.
Outstanding Achievement
In a moment of pride for the host institution, both the NPU Barkur Boys and Girls Jump Rope Teams (Under-19 category) have qualified to represent the state at the upcoming State Level Games scheduled to be held in Koppala in October 2025.
About the Tournament
The Jump Rope Tournament, originally a traditional village game, was formally introduced as a district-level competition in 2012. It has since become an integral part of the regional sports calendar, showcasing athletic talent and promoting traditional games among students.
Other notable attendees included Mr. Rajgopal Nambiar, President of the Parent Teachers Association, and office bearers of Rotary Club Barkur.
