Altar Girls at
last, at St. Peter’s Church in Barkur
For years my home
parish of St Peter the Apostle in Barkur had only altar boys to
serve at Holy Mass and to assist the presiding priest at the
sacred liturgies.
2nd Vatican Council opened the windows of the Holy Roman Catholic
Church and brought about many changes in celebrating the sacred
liturgy that also included girls as altar servers. Many parishes
in dioceses around the world welcomed these changes and girls who
were interested were given the opportunity to be altar servers.
In my archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, here in Minnesota,
www.archspm.org, many parishes have altar boys and girls. At my
parish of St. Thomas the Apostle, www.stthomasap.org, altar girls
were introduced in the early seventies. We presently have 10 altar
girls and they do a marvelous job. The new title for that
wonderful ministry is now called “Altar Servers.”
After so many years I am glad to see that my home parish of St.
Peter the Apostle in Barkur has introduced altar girls. I am sure
there are many parishes in the diocese of Mangalore,
www.dioceseofmangalore.org who introduced altar girls years ago. I
thank our parish priest Rev. Fr. Remigius C.M. Aranha for taking
this important initiative to give an equal opportunity for both
boys and girls to serve at the sacred altar of our Lord.
