The dawn of a Golden Era at Barkur
Gone are those days .. is the only thought was dwelling with
everybody who attended the Suvarna Gramodaya Yojane Chalana
Samarambha or the Inauguration of the Suvarna Karnataka Village
Development Programme on Good Friday at the Kalchapra Junction.
Barkur Panchayath is among lucky 1000 villages out of 27000
villages in Karnataka , those have been selected under the Suvarna
Karnataka Gramabhivriddhi Yojane a dream project of the Karnataka
State Government to mark the Golden Jubilee of Karnataka
Rajyothsava. Under this scheme the villages selected are given
grants to the tune of 2-3 Crore rupees for the total development
and if executed properly will turn the village into beautiful
place with all the basic amenities have been provided for
everybody. Concrete roads, well maintained ponds, pure drinking
water to all, public toilets, tourist center , guest house,
library … the dream list goes on and the challenge lies only with
leaders who are at helm of this project.
The programme took off with a prayer and the all the dignitaries
were welcomed by B.Shantharama Shetty, President, Barkur
Panchayath. The honorable minister for revenues, Jagadeesh Shettar
kicked off the programme by lighting the lamp. The minister who
was on his first ever visit to Barkur was overwhelmed by the
felicitation and numerous garlands offered by various associations
and individuals. Dr. V.S. Acharya , Care taker minister spoke on
the occasion and explained the various aspects of this project.
K.Jayaprakash Hegde, MLA presided over the function and called for
transparent and honest execution of the plans. Raghupathi Bhat,
MLA, Udupi, A.G. Koodgi, Presisent , Third Revenue Commission,
Karnataka Government, B.N. Shankara Poojari, President, Jilla
Panchayath Udupi, P.Hemavathi, CEO, Jilla Panchayath Udupi,
Sathish Poojari, Member, Thaluk Panchayath, Udupi and K.Shrinivasa
Poojari were the other dignitaries present.
Sathynarayana Udupa poposed the vote of thanks and N.M. Bhat,
Manager, Canara Bank , Brahmavara compeered the programme.

Charles Felix Lewis (58), (Barkur) Bangalore
Charles Felix Lewis (58), son of Francis Xavier Lewis and Celine
Lewis, husband of Theresa Lewis (nee Vaz), father of Collin and
Clavia, passed away on
Thursday 5 Apr, 2007.
Funeral will be held at Christu Prabhalaya Church, 4th Block
Jayanagar on Monday, 9 April at 10 am, followed by interment at
Hosur Cemetery.

After 6 years of service to the Mangalorean Community of
Canada,
the Mangalorean Association of Canada is welcoming Mangalorean
residents of Canada to become active members in the association.
We believe that new members will bring in fresh perspective and
infuse new energy to enable us to increase our activities and
reach a larger cross section of the community. It will also give
you a voice in the running of the association and the planning of
its activities.
To launch this process, the
Mangalorean Association of Canada is holding an Open House
on the 31st of March, which will give the interested members an
opportunity to submit their application in person and interact
with the founding members of the association. You can download the
membership application form from MAC website and bring
the completed form with the membership fee to the Open House. Due
to logistical reasons, we will only accept payment in cash at this
time. A receipt will be provided. We are exploring other forms of
payment for the future. Application forms will also be available
at the Open House. At this time Membership is only open to the
residents of Canada who meet the eligibility criteria laid down in
MAC constitution.

The management
committee has decided to adopt CBSE system at Shri Vidyesha
Vidyamanya English medium school from the next academic year.
The Central Board Secondary Education System will be implemented
from LKG to 5th standard for the year 2007-08 at the
beginning to be continued in steps. In the highs school level, the
students have options to study for State or Central board from 8th

College Day
celebration at First Grade College in Barkur
Its
celebration time at Smt. Rukmini Shedthi Memorial National
Government First Grade College, Barkur. Two days of festivities
took off on 22nd February at 9.45 in the morning at
Dr.Gabriel Fernandes
Auditorium of the college. The day was celebrated as the Student
Educational Committee day , presided over by
B.Sudhakar Shetty,
Managing Director, Vasudha Chemicals, Mumbai, Rukmini Residency,
Udupi and man sponsor of the college. Captain Ganesh Karnik , MLA
was the chief guest.
The newly formed Former Students Association and Parents Teachers
Associations were inaugurated Dr. K. Sunder Naik, Vice Chancellor,
Mangalore
University. He was felicitated at this occasion for obtaining a
PhD for thesis on Marathi Community in Coastal Karnataka.
K.K. Naik, retired director of treasury, Karnataka Government
delivered the congratulatory message. Chandra Shekahar Shetty,
President, Hanehalli Panchayath and B.Satheesh Poojari were the
special invitees.
On 23rd February , the college celebrated its 9th
Annual day , started at
10 am at the newly constructed open air stage in the college
premises. K. Jayapraash Hegde, MLA, presided over the function.
Dr.M. Moham Alva, President, Alva’s Educational Institutions,
Moodabidire , also known as Cultural Ambassador of Karnataka
formally inaugurated the open air stage by lighting the lamps and
cutting the ribbons. B.Sudhakar Shetty, M.D., Vasudha Chemicals
was the chief guest.
Dr.B. Udayakuamar Shetty, KAS, probationary Tahasildar who was a
former lecturer in the same college was felicitated on behalf of
the college for being selected as KAS Officer and for obtaining
his Ph.D.
B.Shrinivasa Shettigar, President, Roatary Club, Barkur , the
donor of the open air stage was felicitated at the same occasion.
New courses in B.A. and B.B.M were symbolically inaugurated by
K.Jayaprakash Hegde. He also presented a floral tribute to Kishore
Gonsalves of

player for the college.
Rajashekara Hebbar, Princiapal presented the college report
highlighting the achievements of the Staff and students of the
college in the past years and also gave glimpses of the plans and
progress to have courses like B.S.W., B.C.A., B.Sc. Biotech etc in
the near future.
