A Life of Grace and Service: Remembering Patrick John D'Almeida (1947-2025)

-Prof. P.Archibald Furtado

With profound sadness, our community mourns the loss of Patrick John D'Almeida, a man whose remarkable journey through life embodied the finest qualities of faith, devotion, and community service. As we bid farewell to this cherished soul, we reflect on a life that touched countless hearts and left an indelible mark on the community of Barkur.

Born on September 17, 1947, into the distinguished D'Almeida family of Kachhur, Patrick carried forward a heritage of excellence and service. He was born to Leo D'Almeida, a pioneering figure who served as the first Manager and Agent of Syndicate Bank in Barkur, and his wife Alice D'Almeida, whose grace and dignity Patrick would later mirror in his own life.

His educational journey began at Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala, and continued at National High School, Barkur (NHSS), where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically. On the cricket field, Patrick emerged as a stellar athlete under the guidance of his mentor, Physical Education teacher Mahabala Shetty, and Head Master Shri PN Bhoja Rao. Together with his team, he brought glory to the school by securing the District Champion Shield of Dakshina Kannada, coming tantalizingly close to state-level victory.

The 1960s saw Patrick's deep involvement in religious activities, serving as the president of Legion of Mary. His contemporaries fondly remember how he, along with Secretary Stany Pais and Treasurer Boniface Sequeira, would carry the Phalkin bearing the statue of infant Mary during the Nativity feast (Monthi Fest) celebrations on September 8. Their procession through the main streets of Barkur, supported by Fr. Aloysius Rosario and Fr. Mark Walder, became a cherished community tradition.

After completing his SSLC, Patrick's journey took him to Bombay, where he built a successful career while maintaining strong ties with his alma mater through the NHSS Old Students Association's Bombay wing. His return to Barkur marked the beginning of a new chapter of community service, following in his father's footsteps as the Gurkar of Kachhur Ward. His dedication to St. Peter's Church, Barkur, was exemplary, serving with distinction as Administrator and Vice President of the Parish Pastoral Council, positions once held by his father.

On February 26, 1979, Patrick married Alice, beginning a beautiful chapter of family life. Their union was blessed with two children: Patricia and Roland, and Patson and Mitchell. As a grandfather, he showered his boundless love on Raelyn, Raeann, and Aiden. Though a man of measured words, his actions spoke volumes about his character. His leadership roles in the St. Vincent de Paul Society and Catholic Sabha were marked by unwavering dedication and a genuine desire to help those in need.

Patrick's earthly journey concluded on January 15, 2025, leaving behind a void that words cannot adequately express. His funeral service, scheduled for January 16, 2025, at 5:00 PM at St. Peter's Church, Barkur, will be a gathering to honor not just a family patriarch, but a community pillar whose life exemplified the values of service, integrity, and faithful devotion.

As we bid farewell to this extraordinary soul, we celebrate a life that was a beacon of light to all who knew him. His legacy lives on through his family, his good works, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and wisdom. May his soul find eternal peace in the embrace of the Almighty, and may his family find strength in the beautiful memories he leaves behind.

To Patrick John D'Almeida – beloved husband, father, grandfather, community leader, and friend – we say goodbye with heavy hearts but grateful spirits for having known such a remarkable soul.
