-Kishoo, Barkur
A Barkur-Born Leader Aiming to Steer the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha into a New Era.

Every so often, a community finds in one of its own the rare combination of education, professional accomplishment, and genuine grassroots service. This month, barkuronline.com is proud to feature one such son of the soil — Dr. Deepak Shetty, a name that has been steadily gaining prominence across coastal Karnataka and Bengaluru's Bantara community circles, and who now stands as a strong and capable contender for the President's post in the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha elections for the term 2026–'29, with voting scheduled for 16th August 2026.
Roots in Barkur
Dr. Deepak Shetty is the proud son of Barkur, born to retired teacher Himakar Shetty and retired teacher Vanaja Shetty. Growing up in a household steeped in education, discipline, and family values, he carries forward that grounding into every sphere of his life — professional and social alike. Family, community, and society are said to hold equal weight in his life, and he is widely regarded as an ideal family man who has managed to balance all three with remarkable harmony.

It is perhaps this upbringing that explains why, even after achieving significant professional success and international exposure, he has remained known among peers not for grand titles but for something simpler and rarer: genuine approachability. Colleagues and community members alike describe him as warm, cheerful, always smiling, and someone who speaks to everyone — regardless of status — with the same affection and respect.
Building a Career on Merit
Dr. Shetty's academic journey reflects a rare blend of technical rigor and business acumen. He is a qualified Mechanical Engineer, holds an MBA, and later went on to earn his Doctorate (Ph.D.).
Professionally, he has built a distinguished career with the globally reputed Toyota Motor Corporation, rising to the senior position of General Manager. In this role, he has gained valuable international-level professional experience, having served not only in India but also in Japan and several other countries — an achievement that speaks to both his competence and his adaptability on a global stage.
On the personal front, Dr. Shetty is married to Suma D. Shetty, herself an entrepreneur. The couple have two daughters, and together they are seen by many in the community as a model of a family that lives in harmony with both kin and society.
Simplicity as a Hallmark
Despite his corporate stature and international experience, Dr. Shetty's defining personal quality — one that friends, colleagues, and community members return to again and again — is his simplicity. He treats people from all walks of life with equal warmth, holds deep respect for elders, and is known to encourage and uplift the youth around him. He carries no bias of region or language, moving comfortably between Kannada and Tulu-speaking circles alike, and is widely seen as a unifying figure who brings people together rather than dividing them.

A Decade of Quiet Community Service
What sets Dr. Deepak Shetty apart, according to those who have watched his journey, is not a sudden entry into community leadership but a long, steady arc of involvement — marked by transparency, energy, and consistent results wherever he has taken up responsibility. Social service, many say, is his very life's breath, and organisational work is where his talents truly shine.

His association with the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha and coastal Karnataka's cultural landscape includes several key roles and milestones:
- Treasurer (Koshadhikari) of the Bantara Sangha — recognised for transparent and accountable financial administration.
- Convenor of the Youth Wing and later Chairperson of the Youth Wing — earning a strong reputation for energetic, successful leadership among the community's younger members.
- Karyadhyaksha (Executive Head) of the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation — furthering his commitment to Yakshagana and coastal Karnataka's performing arts heritage.
- President of the Kundapra Kannada Prathishtana, Bengaluru — championing the Kundapra Kannada dialect, language, and culture.
- Lead organiser of the Kayyar Kinhanna Rai Janmashatamanotsava and the D. K. Chowta Amruta Mahotsava — spearheading celebrations honouring important community figures.
- A prominent leader of the 'Kambala Ulisi' (Save Kambala) movement, and a supporter of efforts that have helped Kambala athletes gain recognition at the international level.
- Successful organiser of "Bendooru Tu Badiyada Samagama" — a landmark gathering that brought together Kannada Bantara communities from the north and south of the state.
- First-ever organiser of a Tulu Lipi (Tulu script) revival workshop within the Bantara Sangha — a pioneering initiative to promote literacy in the Tulu script.
- Pioneer of the Kannada–Tulu book exhibition and sales fair held within the Bantara Sangha — encouraging reading and regional-language literature.
- Driving force behind the digital preservation of Yakshagana literature, and behind a historic project to document and preserve traditional folk and cart-procession (ratha sarani) songs.
- Organiser of financial assistance for artists during the COVID-19 pandemic — a gesture widely appreciated within the cultural community.
- Contributor of columns and writings supporting Yakshagana and its artists across various platforms.
Community members describe him not merely as a titleholder in these organisations but as an active, hands-on participant — someone who "walks the talk" when it comes to service, and who is known for taking on responsibility, executing it with sincerity, and following through with 100 percent commitment.
Vision for the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha

As Dr. Deepak Shetty puts himself forward for the President's post of the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha for the 2026–'29 term, his candidacy is being framed around continuity of proven service rather than reinvention. Supporters point to his track record — an engineer's precision, a manager's execution, a treasurer's transparency, and a community worker's heart — as the ideal combination for an organisation that must balance tradition with the practical needs of a growing, urban Bantara population.
Should he take on the leadership, several new initiatives are already being spoken of:
1. Building on the success of "Bendooru Tu Badiyada Samagama" to further unite north and south Kannada Bantara communities under one platform.
2. Establishing a World Kundapra Kannada Day, to celebrate and promote the language and its culture on a wider stage.
3. Popularising Kannada language and culture at a global level — drawing inspiration from how nations like Japan take pride in and promote their own linguistic identity worldwide.
4. Continuing the strengthening of cultural institutions connected to Yakshagana, Kambala, and Tulu heritage.
5. Expanding youth engagement and educational support, building on his record as Youth Wing Chairperson.
6. Sustaining transparent, accountable administration, drawing on his experience as the Sangha's Treasurer.
What the Community Is Saying
Local media voices from coastal Karnataka have also weighed in on his candidacy. Namma Udupi TV and the bilingual weekly Tulunadu Varthe, in extending their congratulations, noted that a son of Barkur rising to prominence in Bengaluru's Bantara circles is a matter of pride for the entire Udupi district. They pointed to education, culture, organisation, and simplicity as the four qualities that define him, and expressed the hope that his leadership — if elected — would help the Bengaluru Bantara Sangha write a new chapter, benefiting not just Udupi but the wider Bunt community as a whole. His foresight, honesty, simplicity, and spirit of service, they noted, deserve continued encouragement.
A Barkur Success Story
For a small town like Barkur, stories like that of Dr. Deepak Shetty are a matter of quiet pride. They are a reminder that the values instilled in modest, education-focused households can, over time, produce leaders who carry their roots with them wherever their careers take them — whether that's Toyota's global corporate corridors or the community halls where the Bantara Sangha gathers its people together.
As the 2026–'29 elections approach, with voting set for 16th August 2026, all eyes in the community will be on how this Barkur-born, Bengaluru-based leader's candidacy unfolds. Whatever the outcome, his journey so far — from Youth Wing Convenor to Treasurer to a wide array of cultural and social leadership roles — stands as a testament to what dedication, education, and genuine service can build over the course of a lifetime.
