In a display of community spirit and religious fervor, the Catholic Sabha Barkur Unit today celebrated Catholic Sabha Day alongside its 35th anniversary at the parish premises. The day's events began with the morning's first Mass, with the liturgical proceedings led by members of the unit themselves. The sacrificial Mass was offered by guest priest Fr. Ivan D'Almeida from Barkur.
Following the Mass, a brief fellowship gathering was held in the lower hall of the parish house. Parish Vicar and Spiritual Director of the unit, Fr. Ronald Miranda, presided over the gathering, with lay leader Ms. Norin Lobo attending as the chief guest.
Several dignitaries graced the occasion, including Parish Pastoral Council Vice President Jossy Fernandes, Secretary Eric Soans, and Parish Pastoral Commission Coordinator Herald D'Souza, who were present as guests of honor.
The fellowship began with an invocation to the Holy Spirit through song. Unit President Edgar Fernandes extended a warm welcome to all attendees. In his introductory address, Mr. Gerald Gonsalves provided a retrospective view of the unit's illustrious 35-year journey since its inception.
The previous year's unit secretary, Rippon D'Souza, presented the 2024-25 annual report to the assembly. In a touching gesture of appreciation, the Parish Vicar honored former presidents of the unit with tokens of affection on behalf of the organization. Of the 19 past presidents, 13 were present to receive this honor in person, while one president was represented by his wife.
Shaila D'Souza introduced the chief guest to the gathering. In her address, Chief Guest Ms. Norin Lobo acknowledged how her experiences with the unit had supported her leadership journey at both the deanery and central levels. She commended the unit for its achievements and was presented with a memento by the unit president in recognition of her contributions.
In his presidential address, the Parish Vicar praised the unity among the unit's members. He also issued a call to action on environmental protection, urging members to reduce plastic usage in their household activities.
Unit Secretary Sharmila Pinto delivered a vote of thanks, bringing the formal proceedings to a close. Ms. Alice D'Souza served as the master of ceremonies for the entire program.
The immediate past president, Pius James D'Souza, along with all members of the executive committee, contributed significantly to the success of the event. Mr. Herbert Menezes enhanced the occasion by capturing photographs. Refreshments, including tea and snacks, were arranged for all attendees.
The celebration not only marked a significant milestone for the Catholic Sabha Barkur Unit but also reinforced the bonds of fellowship and community service that have defined its three-and-a-half decades of existence.
