Historical Artifact unearthed at Barkur.
A sculpture in the form of a slab containing the yellow colored
images of 15 Jaina Theertankaras is found near the
Panchalingeshwara Temple.
This historical piece is said to be carved for the decorations in
the Jaina temples and is a strong evidence for the presence of
Jainas in Barkur. According to renowned historian
Dr. Jagadeesh Shetty there were 25 Jaina Theertanakas and only 15 are found in this
strip. It is believed that the other half of the strip may be
still buried at this place.
The artifact was unearthed when a jack fruit tree was cut and its
roots were being dug and will be sent to Archeological Department
in Bangalore for further research.
