A Shepherd with a Golden Heart – Bishop Henry D’Souza

A Priest of Jesus for 50 Years!

On the joyous and grace-filled occasion of his Sacerdotal Golden Jubilee on 5th May 2026, we, the faithful and admirers, bow in profound gratitude to the Almighty for the precious gift of Rt. Rev. Dr. Henry D’Souza—a shepherd whose life has been a radiant testimony of faith, selfless service, and unwavering commitment to God’s people.

Even today, for the people of Barkur, the very name of Bishop Henry D’Souza evokes pride, affection, and deep reverence.

His journey with Barkur began as a young Assistant Parish Priest at St. Peter’s Church, Barkur (1976–1978)—a brief period in years, yet one that left an indelible mark on the hearts of the faithful.

Even in those early priestly years, his zeal for youth and community building was strikingly evident. He laid the foundation for the vibrant CYM Barkur in 1976, nurturing generations rooted in faith, values, and leadership. The Open Stage of Barkur, constructed and inaugurated on 14th May 1978, continues even today as a lively platform showcasing talent and fostering socio-cultural harmony—an enduring symbol of his vision.

His foresight reached far beyond boundaries. As the guiding force behind the formation of the St. Peter’s Association, Barkur–Mumbai (1988) and later the ICYM Barkur Ex-Members Association (2002), he united Barkurians across distances, strengthening bonds of faith and fraternity worldwide.

A gifted orator, powerful communicator, and inspiring motivator, Bishop Henry’s sermons have always captivated minds and touched hearts. His words—rich in wisdom, simple in expression, and deeply rooted in Gospel values—continue to inspire countless faithful.

His fearless stand against injustice and untruth, combined with his deep compassion for youth and children, truly reflects the heart of a shepherd modeled on Christ.

His elevation as the Bishop of Bellary on 15th March 2008 was not merely an honor, but a rightful recognition of a life wholly dedicated to the Church. Blessed with administrative acumen, pastoral sensitivity, and a deep understanding of people, he has guided his flock with wisdom, humility, and a rare warmth that embraces all.

Yet, despite these heights, Bishop Henry remains deeply rooted in simplicity. His enduring bond with Barkur and its people continues to be personal and heartfelt. He remembers people by name, recalls their stories, and even amidst large gatherings, his affectionate call to a Barkurian stands as a touching reminder—that no distance can diminish genuine love and connection.

As he celebrates 50 glorious years in the vineyard of the Lord, we are not merely marking a milestone, but honoring a mission lived with dedication, grace, and quiet greatness. His life stands as a beacon—reminding us that true greatness lies in humble service and love for humanity.

Dear Bishop Henry D’Souza,

Your life is a blessing, your ministry an inspiration, and your legacy a treasure to the Church and society.

We feel especially privileged that the CYM Barkur, which you founded in your very first and only parish as Assistant Priest, stands today at the threshold of its own Golden Jubilee. Throughout this Jubilee year, various programs and initiatives are being planned by the present youth, while we, the seniors spread across the globe, look forward to uniting in December 2026 and January 2027 for the grand finale.

Your gracious presence on that occasion will surely multiply our joy—something we await with eager hearts and deep affection.

May the Lord, whom you have served so faithfully in countless ways, continue to bless you with good health, abundant grace, and many more fruitful years in His service.

Congratulations on your Golden Jubilee!

Ad multos annos!

Archibald Furtado
