Brief History of the Simhasana Gudde
The Simhasana Gudde, which houses the main deity of Barkur, Sri Mahakali, holds a prominent place in the history of Barkur. The throne, where King Vikramaditya once sat, is enshrined here, along with the lingam that King Vikramaditya worshiped. It is a temple that has witnessed the grandeur of the past.
The Legend of Pandavas and the Shami Tree
The Shami tree, where the Pandavas concealed their weapons during their period of exile, is located here. The very throne on which King Vikramaditya sat is still present, and he performed the archana of the golden Sri Chakra. Over time, this place became a center of devotion and worship, known as Sri Simhavahini Mahakali Devasthan.
The Historical Background of the Temple
In the past, the temple was part of the Barkur princely state's palace complex, serving as the main deity's sanctum. It was known as the abode of truth, and King Vikramaditya's throne was a central element of the temple.
Anjaneya and Other Deities
Adjacent to the temple is the Karanika palace, where deities like Betaleshwara and Kallukuti reside. There are also other shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses within the temple complex.
Shravana Month and Special Observances
During the month of Shravana, the temple witnesses the observance of various rituals, and special emphasis is placed on the worship of Goddess Mahalakshmi. The Simha Sankramana day also includes a unique Sun worship ritual.
Navaratri Festival Highlights
Navaratri at this temple is exceptionally grand. Each day, the Sri Chakra on the Simhasana is adorned with natural colors and decorations. Additionally, during Navaratri, there is a special ceremony where the Navaratri Kalasha is consecrated.
Bhutaala Pandya's Throne
As you enter the temple, you'll notice the "Bhutaala Pandya's Throne," which is believed to be Bhutaala Pandya's resting place. Every Navaratri, this throne is cleaned and prepared for devotees.
The Power of Karanika
The temple is also renowned for resolving issues related to marriage, health, and other problems. Devotees come here seeking solutions to their troubles, and it is believed that by offering the temple's prasada to a troubled well, the issues are resolved.
