-Prof. P. Archibald Furtado
For four decades, Dolphy D’Souza has been a cornerstone of Maryknoll High School, Barkur, serving as an Attender Clerk and leaving an indelible mark on the institution. More than just a staff member, Dolphy has been a guiding light, a mentor, and a unifying force for students and alumni alike. His unwavering passion for his alma mater was evident in his pivotal role during the Silver Jubilee and Golden Jubilee celebrations, where he brought together former students to honor the school’s rich legacy.
Early Life and Education
Born on February 24, 1965, Dolphy was the sixth child of Benedict D’Souza and Theresa Lobo. He grew up in a close-knit family of eight siblings—five sisters (Dulcin Corda, Daisy Barnes, Mable Furtado, Wilma Fernandes, and Meena Saldanha) and three brothers (Gilbert D’Souza, the late Augustine D’Souza, and Xavier Rudolph). Dolphy completed his primary education at Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala Barkur, and went on to earn his SSLC from Maryknoll High School, Barkur. He was the student of first batch of boys to Maryknoll School when it was converted to co education school from Maryknoll Girls High School.
A Multifaceted Personality
Dolphy is a true jack of all trades—an efficient administrator, a gifted actor, a versatile director, an exceptional organizer, and a committed leader. As one of the most renowned former Presidents of ICYM Barkur (established in 1976), he inspired and empowered youth with his vision and dedication. His leadership extended beyond the school, as he served as a Ward Leader (Gurkar), Church Coordinator for 18-20 commissions (a first-time initiative at St. Peter’s Church, Barkur), and a permanent member of the Parish Pastoral Council. Leadership naturally gravitated toward Dolphy, not because he sought it, but because of his unwavering commitment to service.
A Dedicated Family Man
Beyond his professional and community contributions, Dolphy is a devoted family man. He has lovingly cared for his elderly parents, embodying the values of love and responsibility. His wife, Judith D’Souza, a qualified B.Sc. nurse, has been a pillar of support while serving in Sharjah, UAE. Their son, Renon Benedict D’Souza, is currently pursuing I PUC Commerce at the prestigious National PU College, Barkur, and is following in his father’s footsteps as a talented musician, playing both the guitar and keyboard.
Unique Contributions to the Community
Dolphy’s helpful nature and readiness to assist during emergencies have made him a respected and cherished figure in Barkur. As a management committee member of Maryknoll Higher Primary School, Hosala Barkur, he played a crucial role in ensuring the institution’s survival and growth against all odds.
A founder member of Catholic Sabha St. Peter’s Church, Barkur, Dolphy rose to become Unit President, Joint Secretary of the Kallianpur Varado, and a representative of Amcho Sandesh, reflecting his deep social concern. His special connection with teenagers and growing children led Church leaders to entrust him with the role of animator for YCS and ICYM, which he shouldered with dedication for nearly 20 years—a record in itself.
One of Dolphy’s most notable achievements was organizing the Nehru Centenary Celebration as President of ICYM Barkur, a grand event that involved all schools and high schools in Barkur and its surroundings. In 2001, under his leadership, ICYM Barkur organized a 10-day residential deaddiction camp in collaboration with Dr. Shanbhag and the medical staff of Udupi Lombard Mission Hospital. This initiative benefited 45 individuals struggling with alcohol addiction, bringing relief to their families and showcasing Dolphy’s innovative thinking and compassion. He remains an active member and social worker with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
A Man of Many Talents
Dolphy’s artistic talents have earned him recognition in the world of Konkani theater and cinema. His performances in plays and skits caught the attention of renowned Konkani movie director Harry Fernandes, who cast him in special roles in films like Noshibcho Khel and Bendkaar.
Hobbies and Humble Nature
Dolphy’s hobbies include fishing, photography, and visiting the aged, lonely, and elderly. Despite his numerous contributions, he shies away from the limelight, preferring to work quietly for the betterment of others. His involvement in projects like constructing, repairing, and refurbishing homes for the poor and deserving, in collaboration with GBCT, stands as a testament to his selfless nature.
When asked to share photographs of his many initiatives, Dolphy humbly declined, saying, “Sorry, I don’t have anything. I was just a last bencher and a small contributor, and most of the time, the event photographer…” This humility encapsulates the essence of Dolphy D’Souza—a simple, down-to-earth individual whose life serves as an inspiration to many.
A Legacy of Service and Leadership
As Dolphy prepares to retire on February 28, 2025, and settle in his native place, he leaves behind a legacy of selfless service, leadership, and goodwill. His impact on Maryknoll High School, the youth of Barkur, and the broader community will be felt for generations to come.
A true son of Barkur, a leader, a mentor, and a friend—Dolphy D’Souza’s journey is nothing short of remarkable.
Happy 60th Birthday, Dolphy!
