ALL ROADS LEAD TO THE
DESTINATION ROYAL - BARKUR………..!!! Much awaited December, is at the door step, and it is celebrations
time back in Barkur! The Annual Parish Feast, Christmas, The New year,
and most importantly, Silver Jubilee Finale – three day functions - of
ICYM Barkur. Most of you may be in receipt of formal
invitations, and appeals, - to
be a part this historical occasion,
and me just write these few words, to give a brief of various
programmes, to be organised by the local unit, with close union with
‘Silver Jubilee Organising Committee’ and various Sub-committees
entrusted with various responsibilities. To begin with, the action starts with Compricho Aaitar on 15th
December, solemn public veneration of Holy Eucharist, understand,
a talented young guest priest has been booked by the Vicar to celebrate
the Mass, in the evening. After the famous Procession in the main
streets of Barkur and Blessings of the Holy Sacrament, there will be a
preliminary round of past and present member’s meeting. Tuesday evening the vesper, as
usual!, - of course,
one should be present over there to cherish the occasion!! Wednesday the Parish
Feast of St.Peter’s Church Barkur, the
grand mass at 10.30 a.m. with scores of guest priests of the varado as
well as Barkurian origin. The evening cultural programme, The 25th Annual Day Celebrations of the ICYM
Barkur. Plans are underway to have a wonderful entertaining evening
and prelude stage programme will be graced by Rt. Rev. Dr Aloysius
Paul D’Souza, the
Bishop of Mangalore, as the Chief Guest. All Ex- Directors
and Asst. Directors of the Unit, who were the guiding spirit of
this youth movement, will be honoured in public. Popular local M.P. Shri Vinaykumar Sorake, will preside over
the glittering function. Undoubtedly, Sunday, 22nd of December, 2002, will have
all the characteristics to go down into history pages of Barkur, as the
Grand Silver Jubilee of CYM Barkur. Former Vicar General Msgr. Alexander F.D’Souza,
presently, the President of the Karnataka
Konkani Sahitya Academy, will be Chief Guest, of the evening
epoch making event. Founder of ICYM Barkur, Rev.Fr.Henry
D’Souza, has kindly consented to preside over the colourful
function. Moreover, in the morning after the Thanksgiving Mass, a Conference
will be held to honour the distinguished citizens of the Barkur
town / Parish, in every walks of life, not restricting only to
Catholics, but from all communities. As per the motto of CYM, ‘leadership
through service’, outstanding ICYM Members, people served in
literary world, art, public services, achievers in academic arena,
Sports and Games, religious vocations, as well as other
fields….. over the years, also introduced to the general public. Preparations are underway to present a cultural programme by SPA -
Mumbai Unit Youth Wing, the Expressions group etc. There is a public
demand to replay one of the old time hit drama, depending upon the
availability of artists of yesteryears! Another special feature of this day will be the pre-lunch Get-together of all past - ICYM Members to formalise the modalities to establish EX-MEMBER’S ASSOCIATION. Christmas will be celebrated all over the world with gaiety and
religious fervour and the ICYM has chosen this great day to be Thanksgiving Day to Almighty Lord and all admirers
& ICYM PAST MEMBER’S DAY. None other than, Shri Vasanth Salian, Hon’ able Minister for
Fisheries and Ports, Govt. of Karnataka, will be the Chief Guest of the
day. For the first time Barkur and its surroundings will see Konkan
Kogul Wilfy Rebimbus, and his troupe performing live in
Barkur!. An enchanting musical evening one and only Wilfy Nite, by his
talented group, agreeing to perform on Christmas day, itself is a great
honour to us Barkurians ! Since it is a sponsored show,
doubts already cropping in whether, the Church Compound will be spacious
to accommodate thousands of ICYM and Wilfy’s admirers, not only from
Barkur but also from the
neighbouring towns, expected in large number! Prof. Mathew Ninan, Principal of Little Rock Educational
Institutions, Vicar Vara V.Rev.Fr.Xavier Pinto, Episcopal Vicar
of Udupi Rev.Fr. Aloysius D’Souza, ICYM Central Director
Rev.Fr. Elias D’Souza, priests and religious people served in Barkur,
Local MLA ex minister Mr Jayaprakash Hegde, and scores of distinguished
guests, most of the whole
band of Office bearers of SPA Mumbai, representatives of various social
organisations, Heads of educational Institutions of Barkur and the
nearby places of the District, and specially
previous CYM member’s with their families with record numbers,
will be heading towards the royal town Barkur, in weeks / days to come! Various competitions, literary & cultural, are planned for the
youth and children of the parish and Sports and Games events will be
organised to co-memo rate the occasion are chalked out
and held in coming days on District or Varado level. In short, as per the latest reports from the organisers, from Barkur,
it is already a festive mood, with arcs and banners ready to welcome
you, in Barkur!! ‘The Silver
Jubilee Committee’ is
very much
occupied under the able leadership of Mr Herald D’Souza
with other office bearers and Parish Priest & Director of
ICYM Rev.Fr. Sylvester D’Souza, -
all MEMBER’S, cordially inviting one and all and appealing you
to participate and make it convenient well on time. Present unit
with record hundred plus members, under the President-ship of Ms Divya
Furtado, is ready to welcome you, in your own town. Nevertheless, we are missing an important section –A SOUVINIR -
is planned to showcase our CYM of Barkur, its Parish, colourful
people and their achievements. Friends, send in your articles, messages, write-ups, stories,
poems, reminiscence -
anything that you feel
appropriate to find a place here, in this monument, to the future
generation, is welcome……! Also your good wishes and prayers for the success of this great
event, very much solicitude and need of the hour!! Make it a point to
despatch them to the Secretary, of the organising committee Mr
Kishore Gonsalves, well on time, so as to avoid any last moment
disappointments! Further, some people say it rightly, Barkur is active because of
Youth, and one such disciplined forum is CYM, in turn it is the backbone
of Church, hence it is in a way a celebration of the whole parish, a
generation and proud Barkurians all over the world.
All well-wishers, lovers and admirers of Youth of Barkur too, welcome
to join the fiesta. This Barkur Web-site also completing one year on line, in Dec.,
coincided with the commencement of CYM Silver Jubilee Year - as you
witnessed new writers, scholars, people with social concern, not only
contributed but supported, encouraged, corrected and appreciated the
creative work of the Host and this site, time and again. On my part, at times with hesitation, scribbled few lines, in the
Corner attributed to my name, by the Host, and to my utter dismay, many
of you, too generous to recognise their worth,(?) [ though, don’t
know, most of you personally] - in
one word I take this
opportunity to say a big thank you, to all & specially the inventor
of this site Mr.Kishore Gonsalves and admit openly, among other things,
it is this CYM, which shown
the path to this village boy, to come to this stage, for which, I will
remain indebted!!. Very soon, few more Sections will be added and prominent and popular
authors from Barkur as well as few settled abroad and in Mumbai, will
take charge of this all informative site, in the coming days and
personally wish all of them a long, worthy and quality association with
