THE “ICYM FAMILY” - WISH TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU

‘It is said what is memory to mind today, will be history to mankind tomorrow’, and I personally feel, recently concluded three days ICYM Silver Jubilee Celebrations, also contain all features to be one colourful chapter, otherwise sleepy town of historical Barkur.

The Barkur web pages, can give only partial glimpse of what happened at St.Peter’s Church Compounds, during the last two weeks of pleasant chilled winter of December - 2002, and surely no reporter can cover all happenings exhaustively as everything was important on its own.

This is only an effort, to express our gratitude’s to the trio’s who masterminded the whole exercise, and planned it so meticulously to the satisfaction of all - viz. Herald D’souza, Kishore Gonsalves and Divya Furtado.

The unit, ICYM, is fortunate to have such gifted people around it at this crucial time.

Herald D’Souza, a name synonymous with youth activities, for the last couple of decades, inherited lot of qualities from his parents, especially, his father, Mr Baptist D’Souza, a popular Gurkar, of Nagermutt. When the CYM was installed, he was perusing his higher studies in distant Mysore, after passing his B.Sc. started  his career in Banking,  we feel it a divine call, that he got transferred to newly started Corporation Bank at Heardi Barkur in the year 1985.

As per one of his close colleague, Mr Ivan Gonsalves, Herald made his entry reluctantly into the CYM , but later given everything possible to this organisation, being its President, Secretary and now animator. There is none in the history of Barkur Church, who got associated and actively participated in parish activities for so long so nicely. Surely his crowning glory go hand in hand with that of CYM, may it be Decennial Celebrations in 1986, or while holding the prestigious  post of the President of CYM Central Council, Diocese of Mangalore, or as Sachetak of this unit in these days, or by getting elected as Secretary of Parish Council at that young age, for record terms or the President of ICYM Silver Jubilee Celebrations Committee last year – Herald D’Souza proved his commitment to youth causes, in a near perfect measurement.

A man endowed with  scores of qualities, Harry  knows how to get along with people of all ages perfectly, quick to recognise the talents in others, truly  a friend in need is a friend indeed, to hundreds of youth of Barkur, whether he is around or outside, and most importantly a man Friday for everyone - elderly rich or poor alike, in emergencies or celebrations – a man sought for all occasions!!

If we mention his family itself is CYM Family, no exaggeration, his talented wife,  Shaila a perfect life partner, I don’t know how they come close to each other, but surely her melodious voice might have played a role. We have seen both discussing, planning and working as one in the Church, with two kids, late evenings, though his dwelling is 3 k.m.away by walk and 6.km by vehicle!!

In a world, where we can see people craving for name, fame or wealth, one can observe these material things hardly altered  Herald’s social approach, way  we’ve seen way back in 70’s, with the passage of time, his leadership qualities crossed the limits of one community, as a professional Bank employee he never compromised with personalised care and attention to his customers.

Few days back I was in Barkur, in a routine talk, asked few what would have been the secret of Harry’s popularity – simplicity and humble nature!!

In these days, most  of us occupied in our own world, rather no time to others, if there, not keen to involve in such social activities, or consider it a thankless job. A distinguished quality I’ve seen in Kishore Gonsalves is -  he find time for everyone and every good thing! Gifted with rich talents, he is a born artist, a poet and a writer, herein I’ll not elaborate further, rather not possible !

But wish to state that, it is this Kishore’s web-site and lively communications evoked enthusiasm in Ex-ICYM Members spread over the globe., to come together.

While doing 100% justice to the prestigious post of Secretary of ICYM Silver Jubilee Celebrations Committee, Kishore’s role in generating much needed funds, mobilising various people of different ages, convincing Wilfy Remimbus to perform at Barkur on Christmas day, to mark the fitting finale to the  Jubilee, his professional way of monitoring the whole jubilee exercise, deserve accolades!

I feel, it must be his love for this organisation since his childhood days, as it is my personal observation, though they were not members, at the age of 10-12, few children of Kishore’s calibre, like Praveen Carvalho, Eric Soans etc. were actively mingling with youngsters of the time.

I got introduced to Divya Furtado, sometime in Dec.01, through Rohan D’Souza, the President of CYM at that time and she must be Vice President then. A talented young lady, heard very good in her academic career, an organiser, a co-worker, - has successfully motivated the present group and emerged to be one of the great President, ICYM seen, lead team, otherwise dominated by males, during this Silver Jubilee Year. I’m sure, big roles and a bright future, awaits her in days to come..!

CONCLUSION:

Though the above three represent three different stages (or generations?) of ICYM Barkur, but see the co-ordination, co-operation and spirit of working together. Meanwhile, it is through this small note, we express our thanks to these three greats, for all they have done / doing and to all others, who were complimentary by way of support.

By your deeds you three and many others like you, found a permanent place in the colourful History of CYM, Barkur -  now it is a turn to others, specially youngsters, to pick a lesson or two to be one like them, nevertheless we live life in the fast lane, at least make sure you have little time for others!!

Friends, to continue little further, I feel, the newly formed ICYM EX-MEMBER’S ASSOCIATION entrusted these three, with all important responsibility to be the “Co-ordinators or Public Relation Officer’s” of this platform, and we wish them all success in their new role!!

On behalf of ICYM EX- MEMBER’S ASSOCIATION & BARKUR WEB-SITE,

P. Archibald Furtado,  Muscat, 11th February, 2003.

SECRETARY.
