Two distinct features recently appeared in these web pages, doesn’t allow me to keep few of my feelings within myself, - the former the photo feature of SMS educational institutions and the latter the interview of Shri B.Dharmaraja Shetty – hence these few lines to share….

FUTURE TWIN CITIESBRAHMMAVAR - BARKUR

Since 1970 – 75 or so Brahmmavar is the place witnessed fast growth especially after it catapulted to be the center of newly formed Brahmmavar (Legislative assembly) constituency. So far as, my memory goes, Shri S Basavaraj, Late Dr.B.B.Shetty and in these days Shri Jayaprakash Hegde, effectively represented us in the Karnataka Government legislature and their share in the all-round progress of the place commendable.

Introduction:

I can re-collect, when this assembly seat was carved out of erstwhile Udupi - the seat was proposed to be christened as ‘Barkur-Brahmmavar’.  By the passage of time the Geo-commercial importance of Barkur diminished drastically and so the political recognition!

Of course this is not the subject of this article but middle-aged knows better the chronology of events influenced Brahmmavar to be an important city next to Udupi, Kundapur or Karkala of this new District, and we being next door neighbor feel proud of this fairy tale type, fast progress.

One of the yardsticks in ancient times to adjudge the development, importance or progress of a place was to see the number of educational institutions and the commercial activities and by this barometer, Barkur was at the top slot up to 1960/65. (It is in Barkur High school first started in 1948 or so compared to SMS in 1953)

Like Egypt gift of the river Nile, modern Brahmmavar has to be grateful to National high way passing through its heart, just was a boon to start with…. and shifting of Bus stand near Holy Family Church, emergence of quality educational institutions taking queue from well known SMS up to famous Little Rock English Medium School, - now is a place ideally located with excellent transport and fairly good communications network and still plenty of space un-utilized - from Barkur to Heroor Bridge or from Chantar to Mabukal – Honnala.

In continuation of Shri B.D.Shetty’s observations, it is ours as well as many of yours vision, that within next 25 years Barkur- Brahmmavar will be developed as Modern Twin Cities!!

To substantiate this, among other things, we can cite the following few reasoning’s for its joint progress and growth together:

1 The Barkur Railway Station the future gateway to Mumbai - Goa and Mangalore.

2 Barkur is a religious hub with famous places of worship to all major religions and History too authenticate this and Barkur was the center, for centuries

3 State highways to Shimogga via Hulikal Ghat will pass through Barkur and will be shortly developed and broadened.

4 Barkur is the door linking between Coastal lines with interiors like Mandarthi Kokkarne at the backyard rich with agro-products.

5 Geo-cultural distinction of Mangalore-Udupi belt characterized by Tulu language halts at Heroor - Kallianpur River - being the border of Brahmmavar.

6 The inbuilt nature / thoughts of people of these present towns are at large of common - for instance Brahmmavar – Barkur Lions Club formed in 70’s,Catholic Credit Co-operative Society, or present Nagarika Vedike, or Agricultural Development & Research Center and Catholic Political Forum are classic examples for working together with a common goal.

7 It has been proposed few major District Govt. Offices will be constructed here including that of D.C.’s Office and others.

Few suggestions to go-a-head:

Understand that very soon Brahmmavar will have Town Panchayat and hope it will bring better facilities to the citizen’s rather fresh load of taxes!

Rail road co-ordination to be worked out: There are quite a few new roads and improvements to existing one’s proposed and connecting Kota – Saligrama via Kavadi with new bridge nearing completion, Sastan – Moodahadu – Hosala - Barkur still in papers -  these and other links play a big role to reach Barkur Station to people of this area. I ‘m still surprised people here catch train from distant Udupi, many may not aware of Mr. B.D.Shetty and likeminded people’s good work.

Hundekar Committee recommended Brahmmavar to be new Taluk long back, it looks like that shortly this will be done and in this scenario one or few of executive offices can be built in Barkur.

Un-utilized or under utilized agricultural land either side of the Barkur – Brahmmavar state highway can be filled and people to be motivated to start service industries such as modern Filling Station, Good garages etc.

Active co-operation, co-ordination of social organizations to build-up a strong public opinion is the one, immediately thought of.

Conclusion:

With its strategic location, these two towns, linking East via Barkur a place enriched by various rulers and dynasties, connects South and North, at Brahmmavar, this green serene place will be the magnet for entrepreneurs, an formidable educational hub, an eco-commercial center, peaceful dwelling for thousands, provided it reinforces its potential and to be developed in a planned manner with basic infra-structure.

We at Barkur.com invite you to comment on this and feel happy and proud to be associated with the pioneering platforms like Citizen’s Forum in their general utility services.
