A Tribute to Late Mr. B. Seetharama Shetty
(As a Student of National Junior College, Barkur, 1974 - 1979)
-P. Archibald Furtado
It has been over a week since our beloved Principal, Mr. B. Seetarama Shetty, left us for his heavenly abode. A man who devoted nearly six decades of his life to the National Group of Educational Institutions, particularly National Junior College, Barkur, is no longer with us physically. But his legacy, his teachings, and his indomitable spirit remain etched in our hearts and minds.
Today, as we gather to pay our respects to this illustrious personality, we find solace in remembering the countless moments he shared with us in this very place—a place he addressed innumerable times, leaving behind a treasure trove of memories, records, and lessons that will inspire generations to come.
Respected teachers, students, alumni, and the beloved family of our dear Principal, Late B. Seetarama Shetty Sir,
I stand here today not just as a former student of National Junior College, Barkur, but as a representative of the thousands of lives he touched, shaped, and inspired. His passing on February 12, 2025, has left a void that words cannot fill. Yet, as we gather here, let us not mourn his departure but celebrate the extraordinary life of a visionary educator, a compassionate mentor, and a true role model.
A Life Devoted to Education
Born on January 14, 1940, in Kumragodu village, Seetarama Shetty Sir grew up in a humble yet value-driven household. His academic journey—from St. Anthony’s Higher Primary School in Pandeshwar to Sahyadri College, Shimoga, and later earning his MA in Political Science from Karnataka University, Dharwad—reflects his unwavering commitment to learning and knowledge.
His teaching career began at Malnad High School, Vandse, but destiny brought him to National High School, Barkur, in 1963. Under the guidance of Head Master Mr. P.N. Bhoja Rao, he flourished, and when the school transformed into a Junior College in 1972, he took charge as its Founder Principal. For 26 glorious years, he led the institution with dedication, shaping it into a beacon of excellence until his retirement in 1998.
A Principal Like No Other
Seetarama Shetty Sir was not just an administrator; he was a guardian of discipline, a fountain of knowledge, and a source of endless encouragement. We, his students, remember him walking through the corridors, his keen eyes missing nothing, his presence commanding respect and admiration.
He was strict, yet deeply caring. His discipline was never about fear—it was about molding character.
He was a teacher first. Even as Principal, he found time to step into classrooms, especially when teachers were absent, explaining English Grammar—his pet subject—and making complex topics in Political Science and Social Studies come alive for his students.
He was a guide for all. Whether it was a struggling student needing extra help or a teacher seeking advice, his door was always open.
Many of us owe our success in life to the values he instilled in us—hard work, honesty, and perseverance. His words of encouragement and his belief in our potential pushed us to become not just educated individuals but responsible citizens.
A Family Man and a Role Model
Beyond the school walls, he was a loving husband to Hemavathy Ma’am and a proud father to his three accomplished daughters—Anita, Amitha, and Preetha. His ability to balance family and professional life was truly admirable.
A Busy and Fulfilling Retirement
Even after his retirement on January 31, 1998, at the age of 58, Seetarama Shetty Sir remained deeply involved in social, religious, and cultural activities. He served as Correspondent of NJC Barkur and Secretary of The Barkur Educational Society, steering the birth and growth of new institutions like the National ITI Heradi and SVVN English Medium High School.
His leadership was instrumental in three milestone events: the Silver Jubilee of NHSS in 1971, the Golden Jubilee in 1996, and the Platinum Jubilee of National PU College in 2023. Each event was marked by grandeur and the execution of meaningful projects, a testament to his vision and dedication.
His love for agriculture, rainwater harvesting, and his active role in Lions Club of Barkur-Brahmmavar showcased his concern for the underprivileged. He also played a pivotal role in the refurbishment and renovation of several temples and Garodis in and around Barkur, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
His Legacy Lives On..
Though Sir is no longer with us physically, his teachings, ideals, and impact will remain forever. His legacy is not just in the walls of this institution but in the hearts of every student who walked through its gates.
As we bid farewell to our beloved Principal, let us pledge to uphold the values he stood for. Let us carry forward his vision of education—not just for academic excellence but for building character and integrity.
Sir, your journey was long—85 glorious years—but even that feels too short for a man who gave so much to so many. You may have left us, but your spirit will forever echo in these classrooms, in the laughter of students, in the success of every alumnus, and in the fond memories we cherish.
Rest in peace, dear Sir. You have done your duty with both neatness and greatness. It is now our turn to carry your light forward.
Thank you.
