SPA President and Community Pillar
In the esteemed circle of Barkurian achievers, few names resonate with the same warmth, dignity, and community spirit as that of Mr. Boniface M. Sequeira, the current President of St. Peter's Association (SPA) Barkur - Mumbai. A man of stature—both literal and figurative—his journey from a modest beginning in historic Barkur to becoming an inspiring leader in Mumbai stands as a testament to his dedication, service, and charisma.
Early Life and Education
Born on August 30, 1950, in the picturesque coastal town of Barkur's Japkali Kudru, Boniface was the fourth son of Thirbus and Bridget Sequeira. From his formative years, young "Bonnie," as he is affectionately known, was deeply connected with St. Peter's Church. He actively served as a member of the Legion of Mary, quickly becoming the blue-eyed boy of Rev. Fr. Mark Valder, assistant parish priest, and Rev. Fr. Aloysius Rosario, the Vicar. These early associations weren't merely religious duties but the first indications of his emerging leadership and passion for community service.
His educational journey began at Maryknoll Higher Primary School in Hosala, Barkur, where he studied from first through seventh grade before continuing at National High School, Barkur. Throughout his schooling, he distinguished himself not only academically but also as a dynamic sportsman, with performances that became the pride of his institutions and earned widespread admiration.
It's worth noting that despite being struck by a severe typhoid fever during an Annual Athletic Meet, which confined him to his home for nearly two months, Bonnie later realized his athletic dreams in Mumbai. His family has contributed several exceptional athletes to society, including his younger brother Michael, who achieved recognition in state and national marathons.
Life in Mumbai: Professional Success and Community Service
With aspirations as vast as the Arabian Sea, Mr. Sequeira arrived in Mumbai—the city of opportunities—where he secured employment with prestigious insurance companies. His tenure at the renowned 'New India Assurance Company' was characterized by sincerity, exemplary work ethic, professionalism, and remarkable interpersonal skills, which quickly established him as a valued asset in corporate circles. However, beyond his professional achievements, his heart remained anchored to his roots.
Inspired by his elder brother, the late Mr. Simplen Sequeira—founder and first President of SPA Mumbai in 1988—Boniface followed a similar path and eventually rose to serve as President of the SPA for two highly successful terms (2016-2019 and 2022-2025). Under his inclusive and visionary leadership, the association flourished, becoming a symbol of unity and shared purpose among Barkurians in Mumbai.
Devotion to His Alma Mater
While his professional accomplishments and leadership roles are numerous, Mr. Sequeira never forgot the institution that helped shape his character—Maryknoll Higher Primary School. Handpicked by Headmaster Victor Dias as the first School People Leader when Maryknoll launched its inaugural Class VII, he has remained one of its most generous supporters and ambassadors. He regularly contributes to its development and champions its cause among alumni and well-wishers.
His philanthropy, especially in education and social upliftment, reflects his core values. For decades, SPA under his guidance has maintained its commitment by providing uniforms, honorary teachers' salaries, and stationery to the school. He carries a deep concern that despite giving life to thousands over its 85-year history, the school hasn't grown to meet the aspirations of alumni like himself and many others.
Family Life
Mr. Sequeira married Wilma, a teacher at a convent school, on June 4, 1977. Though born and raised in Andheri East, Mumbai, she had roots in Gangolli. She remained his steadfast source of encouragement and support throughout their marriage. The devout couple was blessed with a wonderful daughter, Vanessa (now married to Joachim and settled in Bangalore), and a son, Venance, both of whom hold multiple academic degrees. Venance currently serves in New Zealand. Mr. Sequeira is also a proud grandfather to Aaron and Angel.
Life took a painful turn when Mrs. Wilma Sequeira was called to her heavenly abode on May 7, 2023, at just 67 years of age (born September 19, 1956), leaving him alone in his spacious Chembur home.
A Personality That Inspires
Some individuals command attention by their mere presence—Mr. Boniface Sequeira is undoubtedly among them. Attractive and well-groomed, with a calm yet confident demeanor, he carries himself with poise and grace. What truly distinguishes him, however, are his exceptional communication and public relations skills. An articulate speaker, persuasive motivator, and attentive listener, he has been the face and voice of numerous noble causes.
His ability to mobilize resources and raise funds for charitable initiatives testifies to both his credibility and tireless efforts. Under his stewardship, several benevolent projects have come to fruition, touching the lives of the less privileged and strengthening community bonds.
Leadership Philosophy
Inclusive by nature and decisive in action, Mr. Sequeira believes in leading from the front. His tenure at SPA has been characterized by transparency, teamwork, and shared vision. He ensures every member feels valued and every opinion matters. His ability to shoulder responsibilities, mediate during difficult times, and foster unity has elevated the SPA to unprecedented heights.
During his six years of leadership, his initiatives and achievements would require volumes to document fully. Notably, under his visionary guidance, SPA successfully pioneered two innovative online global entertainment programs, including 'Kantar Fiesta'—a first among Mangalorean Associations in Mumbai—during the COVID-19 pandemic, setting a remarkable precedent.
Even today, Barkur parish remains etched in his heart. His regular visits, participation in parish events, and constant engagement with the people of his hometown clearly demonstrate his enduring affection and commitment to his roots.
Legacy of Service
Mr. Boniface Sequeira exemplifies the spirit of service, excellence, and leadership. A man shaped by strong values and guided by clear vision, he continues to be a source of pride and inspiration not only to SPA Mumbai but also to the broader Barkurian community. As we honor him this month, we also celebrate the many lives he has touched and the legacy he continues to build—one of humility, harmony, and heartfelt service.
We Barkurians in general, and SPA Members in particular, remain forever indebted to Boniface Monthu Sequeira for his sacrifice, contribution, and leadership. As he approaches his 75th birthday on August 30, we offer our humble prayers to the Almighty Lord to bless him with continued good health and happiness. May his leadership qualities and connections with people near and far persist, his thoughtful greetings on special occasions continue, and his dream of Maryknoll's revival be realized through the intercession of Mother Mary, who has always held a special place in his heart.
With warmest regards,
