NOTICE AND RECOGNISE EACH OTHER’S TALENTS AND SERVICES. For the last couple of years, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has done a marvellous job in recognising and honouring young talents. We are greatly impressed to see youngsters in the literary fields chosen for this respect and appreciation. The popular names like our own Kishore Gonsalves and musician, lyricist, singer Wilson Olivera are the latest addition in this prestigious ‘role of honour’. What is happening generally is, either a writer, artist is understood, once he enters the evening of his life, at times after his death. A social worker, an outstanding professional, a good teacher, a talented personality, a successful businessman, a quality leader, a good sportsman - must be encouraged at the time he is not only alive, but in a position to contribute to the cause one chosen, further in his life time. History has great men like uncrowned king of ancient China, Confucius who was not valued or understood when he was alive. In every society, it is common, all praises, appreciation come very late and his/her contribution will be realised after one’s death! Barkur.com is a small web site, wish to toe a different line and a beginning is already made, the living legends of this tiny town Barkur are introduced through its various pages like Personality of the Month, Messages, News etc and. I am sure, you have realised by doing so we have dual objectives: It is society’s gratefulness to the individual’s sacrifices and special contribution. To call on youngsters to follow the example of this achiever’s to excel in their life. Generally, few of us might have observed that, when an artist, writer or any achiever in various fields, is respected in any small or big public programme, the person chosen, in reply, as a tribute to the organisation or the platform, calls back his memories, hardships encountered on his / her way…. and the testing times and the people encouraged them to walk on such distinct road. These facts of their life will surely inculcate enthusiasm and serve as lampposts to children and budding artists. It is human to feel happy once you see a line or two as a feed back in messages, but at times we are very stingy to say it in public. A few days back, I was chatting with one time regular contributor to our web pages, asked ‘why in these days he is not around?’ The answer is ‘I myself don’t know whether my feelings or writings go well with the visitors or not…. No comments.. No disagreements even.. So I stopped….!’ Friends, the above feelings, must not be viewed as, we are against elder’s being chosen for awards or rewards, not at all, justice delayed is better than justice denied all together. We are well aware, only a small percentage of great men are lucky to get due respects, on the other extreme still there are cases of some, beating their own drum, lobbying and few influencing people with power, for Govt recognition and to fetch monetary benefits! Posthumous respects looks sensible in case of national heroes in police, armed forces, who are sacrificing their lives. Before concluding let us invite our reader’s to send in the details of Barkurian greats, whom we may not know and their achievements, which you feel to be made known to all of us, to be an inspiration. It is the measurement we giving to others, we receive, am I right..? On behalf of Barkur.com and ICYM Ex-Member’s Association, Barkur. P. Archibald Furtado, Muscat, 3rd August 2003.
