Heradi-Barkur, September 2024 - In a proactive step towards nurturing well-informed and confident young individuals, Shree Vidyesh Vidyamanya National English Medium School recently organized a groundbreaking awareness program addressing the crucial topic of adolescent body changes. The event, held on the school premises, brought together students from classes 6 to 10 for an enlightening session that aimed to demystify the often confusing and sometimes intimidating journey of puberty.
The program, aptly titled "Adolescent Body Changes are Normal, but be Aware and Cautious," was led by the esteemed resource person, Mrs. Sushma Carvalho, BSc in Nursing. With her wealth of experience in healthcare and a compassionate approach to sensitive topics, Mrs. Carvalho created an atmosphere of trust and openness, encouraging students to engage with the subject matter without hesitation or embarrassment.
As the students filed into the school auditorium, there was a palpable mix of curiosity and nervous energy. The event kicked off with a soulful prayer hymn rendered by Eshani and her group, setting a tone of reverence and reflection for the proceedings to follow. Andrea, a member of the school's Science Club, took charge as the event's presenter, guiding the audience through the program with poise and clarity.
In her welcome address, Ashrita warmly greeted the attendees, emphasizing the importance of such educational initiatives in fostering a healthy and informed student body. Chaitra then took the stage to introduce Mrs. Carvalho, highlighting her qualifications and expertise, which immediately captured the students' attention and respect.
As Mrs. Carvalho began her presentation, the auditorium fell into a hushed silence. With a blend of scientific facts, relatable anecdotes, and gentle humor, she navigated the complex terrain of adolescent physical and emotional changes. "Remember," she emphasized, "these changes are not just normal, they're a sign that your body is growing and developing as it should. There's no need to panic, but it's crucial to be aware and informed."
One of the most impactful segments of the talk focused on the critical issue of distinguishing between good touch and bad touch. Mrs. Carvalho employed role-playing scenarios and interactive discussions to drive home this essential life skill. "Your body is your own," she stressed, "and you have the right to decide who can touch you and how. Trust your instincts, and never be afraid to speak up if something doesn't feel right."
The students, initially shy, gradually opened up as the session progressed. Hands shot up during the Q&A session, with students seeking clarification on various aspects of puberty and personal safety. Mrs. Carvalho addressed each question with patience and sensitivity, ensuring that no student left the auditorium with lingering doubts or concerns.
Principal Mrs. Likhita Kothari, visibly moved by the session's impact, shared her thoughts: "In today's world, where our children are exposed to so much information – not all of it accurate or age-appropriate – programs like these are absolutely essential. They provide our students with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate their adolescent years safely and confidently."
The event was a collaborative effort, with Science Teacher-in-charge Mrs. Suveda working closely with Science Club President Keerthana and Secretary Abhijna to ensure its success. The dedication of the organizing team, including Science Club in-charge teachers Mrs. Amrita Shetty and Mrs. Aparna, along with other teaching and non-teaching staff, was evident in the smooth execution of the program.
As the session drew to a close, Jnanesh delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Mrs. Carvalho for her invaluable insights and to the school administration for facilitating such an important discussion. The applause that followed was not just a formality but a genuine appreciation for the knowledge imparted.
In the days following the event, the impact of the program was clearly visible. Students were overheard discussing the session in the corridors, sharing insights with their peers who couldn't attend. Teachers reported an increased openness among students to discuss health-related concerns, indicating a positive shift in attitudes towards these often-taboo subjects.
Reflecting on the program's success, Science Club President Keerthana remarked, "It's amazing how much difference a single session can make. Many of us were nervous about these changes happening to our bodies, but now we understand that it's all part of growing up. We feel more prepared and less afraid."
The school's initiative has not gone unnoticed in the wider community. Parents have expressed their appreciation for the school's proactive approach to adolescent education, with many calling for similar programs to be conducted regularly.
As Shree Vidyesh Vidyamanya National English Medium School continues to prioritize holistic education, this adolescent awareness program stands as a shining example of its commitment to nurturing not just academically proficient students, but well-rounded, confident individuals ready to face the challenges of adolescence and beyond. In a world where information is abundant but wisdom is rare, such initiatives play a crucial role in guiding young minds towards a healthy and informed future.
