Barkurians are celebrating the remarkable achievements of veteran athlete Michael Sequeira, known as the "super hero of 1976 - 77" from National Junior College, Barkur. Michael, who was a champion in 200 and 400 meters races during his college days, has continued to shine in the world of running.
Sometimes ago he secured the 2nd place in the Mumbai 10k Marathon with an impressive timing of 1.05.13 seconds, proving that his passion for running has not waned over the years. In the past, Michael clinched the Gold Medal in a 10 KM race for men above 60 years during the 'India Unity Marathon 2019' in Bandra, Mumbai, finishing the race in just 1 hour, 5 minutes, and 53 seconds. Additionally, he claimed the 1st place in the 10 K Thane Warrior Marathon in the 60+ category, earning himself a well-deserved trophy and medal.
Hailing from Japkali Kudru in Hosala Barkur, Michael's family has a rich history of participation in sports and games. His elder brothers, Simplen and Bonnie, were former SPA Presidents, reflecting the family's deep-rooted love for sports.
Michael Sequeira's dedication to sports is not limited to watching; he actively participates and excels in various running events. In his high school days in 1974, he was a Udupi Taluk level Champion, and in 1976-77, during the two-day sports event for Junior Colleges held in NJC Barkur, he secured the first place in 200 meters, 400 meters, and the 200X4 relay. He narrowly missed the top spot in the 100 meters, settling for second place.
