'Jnyana Deevige' Lecture Series Illuminates Young Minds at National Junior College Barkur

In a significant step towards fostering appreciation for Kannada culture and literature among the youth, National Junior College (NJC) Barkur launched its much-anticipated 'Jnyana Deevige' lecture series on Thursday, July 18, 2024. The inaugural session, held in the college auditorium, marked a flying start to this educational initiative aimed at Class X and Pre-University students.

Despite recent challenges posed by torrential rains and flooding in the region, which led to the cancellation or postponement of numerous events, NJC Barkur remained steadfast in its commitment to cultural education. The half-day seminar, commencing at 2:30 PM, featured Dr. Ramesh Acharya, a renowned researcher and acclaimed writer, as the keynote speaker.

Principal Prof. U Kottraswamy, in his presidential address, highlighted the significance of the event. "This special lecture by Dr. Ramesh Acharya serves as a curtain-raiser, igniting a series of talks and workshops designed to provoke young minds and fuel their thirst for knowledge," he stated. Prof. Kottraswamy noted the students' attentiveness as a testament to their eagerness to explore the rich and diverse tapestry of Kannada literature.

The event began with a meticulously planned introduction by Mrs. Jyothy, a Lecturer in Kannada, setting the tone for the afternoon. Following a prayer by the students, Mrs. Usha Kiran Shetty, Lecturer in Mathematics, extended a warm and floral welcome to Dr. Acharya and other dignitaries. The traditional lighting of the oil lamp by the guests marked the official inauguration of the seminar.

Dr. Ramesh Acharya, Principal of the Government First Grade College, Barkur, captivated the audience with his scholarly and quick-witted presentation. His talk delved into the roots and various forms of Kannada folklore and literature, showcasing the language's rich cultural heritage. Dr. Acharya's lecture was peppered with quotations from a diverse array of songs, proverbs, and sayings, drawing from both renowned and lesser-known poets and writers of bygone eras.

The speaker paid homage to timeless literary giants such as Nadoja Pampa, Ranna, Raghavanka, Sarvajna, Basava, Akkamahadevi, and Allamprabhu, reciting some of their most profound verses. The interactive nature of the session was evident as students eagerly participated in solving riddles and interpreting oral traditions, jokes, and proverbs, making the learning experience both engaging and enjoyable.

Prof. P. Archibald Furtado, Administrative Coordinator of the National Educational Institutions, expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Acharya's contribution. "This insightful lecture not only inspired our students but also rekindled passion and curiosity in our teachers and staff," he remarked while presenting a memento to the esteemed speaker.

The well-organized program concluded at 4:15 PM with a vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Hemavathy PS, Headmistress of the National High School section. Her closing remarks underscored the event's success in achieving its objectives of cultural enlightenment and literary appreciation.

The 'Jnyana Deevige' lecture series represents a significant initiative by NJC Barkur to bridge the gap between classical Kannada literature and contemporary youth. By providing a platform for direct interaction with scholars like Dr. Acharya, the college aims to nurture a new generation of culturally aware and linguistically proficient individuals.

As the first in a series of planned events, this inaugural lecture has set a high standard for future sessions. The enthusiasm displayed by both students and faculty suggests that 'Jnyana Deevige'will play a crucial role in preserving and promoting Kannada cultural heritage among the youth of the region.

The success of this event not only highlights NJC Barkur's commitment to holistic education but also serves as a model for other institutions seeking to integrate cultural studies into their curriculum. As the 'Jnyana Deevige' series continues, it promises to be a beacon of knowledge, illuminating the path for young minds to explore and embrace their rich cultural legacy.
