Brahmmavar, August 30, 2024 - The serene atmosphere of the Holy Family Church in Brahmmavar was filled with an air of reverence and hope as hundreds of faithful gathered to commemorate the 4th anniversary of Fr Alfred Roche's declaration as a Servant of God. The event, marked by solemn prayer and joyous celebration, served as a poignant reminder of Fr Roche's enduring legacy and the community's fervent desire to see him elevated to sainthood.
The commemorative Mass, presided over by Rev Fr Mathias Dias OFM Cap, drew attendees from far and wide, all united in their admiration for Fr Roche's life of service and devotion. In his stirring homily, Fr Dias reflected on the scriptural passage from Matthew 13:43, drawing parallels between the righteous who "will shine like the Sun in the Kingdom of their Father" and the luminous example set by Fr Roche throughout his lifetime.
"We are truly blessed to have witnessed the holy life of Servant of God Fr Alfred Roche," Fr Dias proclaimed to the rapt congregation. "As we gather here today, we not only celebrate his memory but also fervently pray for his eventual beatification and veneration. May he soon join the triumphant communion of Holy Saints."
The life of Fr Alfred Roche, born as John Peter on April 3, 1924, in Moodahadu Kudru, Barkur, is a testament to unwavering faith and dedicated service. As the fifth child of Isaac Roche and Carmine Monteiro, young Peter John's journey to priesthood began with his education at local schools, culminating in his graduation from the esteemed Milagres High School in Kallianpur.
At the age of 20, he answered the call to religious life, joining the Capuchin Seminary in Faraghipet in 1944. Ordained as a priest on April 11, 1951, in Kotagiri, Tamil Nadu, Fr Roche's missionary work began as an Assistant Novice Master in Farangipet monastery. His dedication and spiritual acumen caught the attention of Bishop Basil Peris of Mangalore and the Provincial of Capuchins, leading to his appointment as the first parish priest of the fledgling Holy Family Church in Brahmmavar on April 4, 1956.
Fr Santa Lopez, OFM Cap, the Vice Postulator for Fr Roche's cause of canonization, provided insights into the ongoing efforts to document Fr Roche's life and reported miracles. "We are meticulously gathering evidence, testimonies, and accounts of miraculous healings attributed to Fr Roche's intercession," Fr Lopez explained. "The response from the faithful has been overwhelming, and it strengthens our resolve to see Fr Roche recognized for his exceptional holiness."
The commemoration extended beyond the Mass, with a touching prayer service held at Fr Roche's tomb in the adjacent cemetery. The sight of devoted pilgrims kneeling in prayer, some with tears in their eyes, was a powerful testament to the deep impact Fr Roche continues to have on the community.
A notable aspect of the ongoing veneration of Fr Roche is the museum established within the Brahmmavar Church premises. This repository houses carefully preserved relics and possessions of Fr Roche, offering visitors a tangible connection to the revered priest's life and work.
"The museum serves as a place of reflection and inspiration," shared Micheal Furtado, Vice President of the Parish council. "Each item tells a story of Fr Roche's humility, his love for the poor, and his unwavering faith. It's a blessing to have such a treasure in our midst."
The event organizers ensured that the day was not only one of spiritual nourishment but also of community bonding. A communal lunch was served to all attendees, fostering a sense of fellowship among the diverse group of pilgrims. Additionally, prayer leaflets, literature, and books detailing Fr Roche's life and teachings were distributed, catering to the growing interest in learning more about this potential saint.
As the sun set on this day of remembrance and hope, the air was thick with anticipation for what the future might hold. The faithful left with renewed vigor in their prayers for Fr Roche's canonization, carrying with them the inspiration drawn from his exemplary life.
"Fr Roche's legacy is not just in the miracles attributed to him, but in the way he lived his life – with complete devotion to God and selfless service to others," reflected Fr Santa as the event drew to a close. "May his example continue to guide us, and may we soon have the joy of calling him Saint Alfred Roche."
As the cause for Fr Roche's canonization progresses, the annual commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the impact one life, lived in faithful service, can have on generations to come. The people of Brahmmavar and beyond continue to draw strength and inspiration from the Servant of God Fr Alfred Roche, eagerly awaiting the day when the Church might officially recognize what many already hold in their hearts – that among them lived a true saint.
